 Wizards Win 7-0 *Updated*

**Updated with the name of our Hungarian trialist, Ferenc Beres**
After a first half in which the U-17s were "buzzing around a lot", they got a bit tired in the second half and the Wizards expectedly punished them. We tacked on five in the second half in the first game-like action of the 2009 campaign.
2nd half lineup
Pardo (Kevin Guppy 60); Zavagnin, Conrad (Myers 60), Besler, McKenzie; Pizarro (right not left as previously indicated), Watson, Ference Beres, Zusi; Kraus, Lopez
Goals
55th- Zavagnin played through ball for Nelson Pizarro who slotted home from just outside the 6.
65th- Kraus played Myers through up the right. Myers out-ran their outside back and buried the ball inside the upper 90 at the near post.
68th- A great combo on the right between Myers, Lopez and finally Pizarro through up the right. Pizarro hit a hard-hit cross along the ground for our Hungarian trialist friend, Beres, who tapped home from close range.
80th- Zusi played a ball into Lopez at the top of the 18 who immediately laid it off for Beres for a well-hit ball inside the far post from 20.
85th- Watson and Pizarro worked a nifty combo before finding Lopez at the top of the 18. His shot from the top of the area deflected off a defender to Kraus at the back post for an easy tap in.
Kevin Guppy is a rookie free agent GK from Cal State Northridge. Read his college bio here.

Wizards up on U-17s 2-0 at half

Jon Kempin started in goal for the U.S. U-17s and made excellent saves off of efforts from Davy Arnaud in the 20th and 27th minutes, but we were able to score two past him in his 45 minutes of action.

Goals
24th-Morsink put Souter through behind defense near top of the 18. Souter got a touch to the ball on goal, but Kempin made a save. Souter was able to beat the defense to the rebound, however, and slide the ball into the open net for a 1-0 KCW lead.

41st- Lopez plays short corner to Myers who gives back to Lopez 18 yards off the end line near the touch line. Lopez sends a cross into the area that bounces in front of goal to Hohlbein for an easy header from just off the goal line.

1st half lineup
Hartman (Pardo 30th); Leathers, Conrad, Hohlbein, Marquess; Myers, Morsink, Arnaud, Souter; DeMartin, Lopez

2nd half lineup
Pardo; Zavagnin, Conrad, Besler, McKenzie; Zusi, Watson, trialist from Hungary, Pizarro; Kraus, Lopez

Sorry guys, I don't have any further info on the trialist. Kempin came out of the game at the half for the U-17s. No one is playing more than 45, hence Zavagnin filling in at right back. As you know, Herculez is out for 4-6 weeks. Harrington has a slight muscle strain, so he's not playing today, but he should be fine.

 Herculez QnA

Speaking of Herculez, here's a great QnA with our late-season acquisition from Colorado last year. Though he's out for a while, we'll be very excited to have him back. Check it!

 Jewsbury Update/Herculez Injury

Herculez warming up the first day of training last week.

Cole Young of the KC Star checked in today with an update on the travels of our favorite #14. Jack Jewsbury is now back with the U.S. National Team hoping to impress Bob Bradley and co. for this busy 2009 international calendar. Read Cole's update here.

At the bottom of the story, you'll notice the update on Herculez Gomez. Gomez injured his miniscus during the second day of training and had to have surgery yesterday. He's out and doing well. Now it's on to rehab. He's expected to be out 4-6 weeks, so he'll likely be back fully healthy in time for the season to start. Whether or not he is back to game fitness by March 21 will be another matter. Hopefully you'll be seeing #21 running up and down the right flank again soon.

 Jon Kempin Update

As I've referenced twice in the last couple of days, KCW Juniors U17 goalkeeper Jonathan Kempin (a former Blue Valley North student) is in Bradenton with the U.S. U-17 residency program. As I've also referenced, we play the residents tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET. Earl Edwards is the clear-cut number 1 right now for our U-17s, but Jon is in a battle with Spencer Richey of Seattle for the number 2 gig. If he beats out Richey in the most recent competition, he'll leave with the squad tomorrow for Chile and a camp to prepare for the upcoming CONCACAF U-17 championship event.

If Jon (who qualifies still as a U-16) doesn't beat out Richey, he'll stay with the team in Bradenton and get a chance to play against the Wizards in tomorrow's scrimmage. It's really a win-win for both Jon and the Wizards, as we'll get a chance to see how he is progressing first hand if he stays. We'll have more on this leading up to and after tomorrow's scrimmage.

 JJ/Training Update/U-17 Match

A little soccer-tennis action from last year's trip to Bradenton.

Some of you may have seen this, but the U.S. Nats have retained Jack Jewsbury for their extended camp ahead of the Mexico game. As you know, several Europe-based players will probably be called in, but Jack and the other 19 guys still have the chance to impress Bob Bradley ahead of a very busy international calendar in 2009. Read the full release and roster here at ussoccer.com.

On a Jewsbury-related note, make sure you guys check out sgfsoccer.com for all of your Southwest Missouri soccer info. Ole does a great job of covering the sport in the region. He also hosts some pretty mean Wizards watch parties during the season. Check out his site for more information.

Just got word back that training went well today. It lasted for about 90 minutes and featured the standard dynamic warm-up followed by some small-sided stuff. The weather currently in Bradenton, Florida you ask? 73 degrees and cloudy. Tomorrow it's a little colder, with 58 degrees and storms in the forecast. Hopefully they can get in some rainless training in the afternoon.

A correction for you. Originally we told you we play the U-17s tomorrow, but that is incorrect. We actually play them Saturday morning at 10 a.m. We'll let you know how it goes...in case you're wondering, yes KCW Juniors goalkeeper Jonathan Kempin is still in Bradenton with the U-17s. We'll have a little more on that later today.

 Thursday Roundup

Chad Becker nearly wasn't a 'keeper at all, he'll be at our Open Tryout in March.

Our second game of the season makes Jeff Bradley's First XI list of top games of the first three months of the season. He says that our trip to Colorado highlights two teams that will need to show early this year whether they are (in our case) a contender or (in Colorado's case) a playoff-caliber team. Let's hope he's right that it's a great game and the Wiz come out on top. See the full list here.

Sean Wheelock hosts a weekly radio show on topics concerning the U.S. and international soccer (football) for BBC in the UK. This time, he had our friend Jimmy Conrad on for a chat. Click here to listen.

Future Wizards open tryout participant Chad Becker is featured in a story by his hometown paper from suburban St. Louis. Becker became a goalkeeper late in high school on an emergency basis and eventually became the starter at Rockhurst University for Tony Tocco. Good read.

KCW Juniors Named in Top 30 Boys Clubs

The KCW Juniors U-19 team that finished as runners up at the 2008 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships after winning Kansas State Cup and Regionals.

Soccer America today put out the top 30 boys clubs in the United States, with our 2-year-old program clocking in at number 30. Only three other MLS clubs appeared ahead of our Juniors. Chicago came in at 15, Columbus at 23 and D.C. United at 29. Soccer America failed to mention that we currently have a member of our academy enrolled at the Bradenton Residency Program, goalkeeper Jonathan Kempin. Read the full Soccer America list.

As you probably remember from last week, three of our U-18s were recently recognized by ESPN RISE as All Americans for their high school season performances.

 MLS Schedule Released Tomorrow

MLS just put out a release confirming that the full 2009 schedule will be announced tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT on mlsnet.com, with a press release going out around 11:30 a.m. CT. We will put our schedule out shortly after that, so by tomorrow you'll know exactly when we'll play. Get ready to plan birthday parties, family trips and the like around our schedule. Hopefully we get to see quite a few of you on some road trips this year!

Final Practice Right Now/Team Leaves Tomorrow

The final Kansas City practice of this initial camp is going on right now out at Swope. If you don't mind snow and cold, feel free to attend. The guys leave tomorrow for two weeks of camp in Bradenton, FL. As you recall from last year, it's kinda pretty down there:

Some of the guys warm up before scrimmaging D.C. United last spring.

While Hillcrest won't be making the trip this year, we'll do our best to keep you up to date with as much news and information as possible. So far there are four games scheduled, but we maight add a scrimmage here or there. We'll let you know. The schedule for Bradenton looks like this:

Day, Date Time Opponent
Friday, Jan. 30 10 a.m. ET U.S. U-17s

 The Andy Williams Story

Williams hit a not-as-famous half-field goal against the Wizards in 2007.

Many of you have probably already heard of this, but it's worth passing along for those of you who haven't. Andy Williams' wife is battling cancer. It's been a tough go. There have been media reports in various places, but two came out today. Check out Kyle McCarthy's version at Goal.com or Maria Burns Ortiz's version at ESPN Soccernet.

If you can, feel free to offer support to the Williams family. If you can't, please keep them in your thoughts and/or prayers.

 Happy Monday

After a crazy birthday weekend of partying, Hillcrest Road is back after a couple of morning aspirins (jokes folks, jokes). The boys get back to training in about ten minutes, so if you're off or sick or otherwise not busy, head out to Swope Park to see them in action. They leave for Florida Wednesday for two weeks of training down in Bradenton (just south of Tampa).

Though we now know he didn't get in the game, check out the St. Louis Post Dispatch's story about Jack Jewsbury that ran Saturday morning before the U.S. National Team match. Also note that Roger Espinoza didn't make it into the match in a 4-1 win for Honduras Saturday night against Nicaragua. The bicolor did advance to the semis, however, which means that they will be in action at the CONCACAF Gold Cup later this year in addition to their Hexagonal World Cup qualifying dates. Honduras, and possibly Roger, will be busy on the international front this year. Good and bad for Wizards fans, as we might be without Espinoza's services at times.

Also, David Streeter posted at the Topeka Capital-Journal local sports blog a story based on an interview he did with our favorite Robb. He covers our first year at CAB and then looks ahead to our second year at CAB and our future home near the former Bannister Mall. Read and enjoy.

A bit late, but read Ives Galarcep's breakdown of the MLS expansion race. Always fun to read and think about.

 Happy Birthday!

We're 1!! Read through the archives and tell us what your favorite moment of the first year was. We're always looking to improve, so hopefully we do.

Fun mess-making at Bannister!

Wowee. Look at this article from Seth Vertelney from Goal.com. He really pumps up the construction over at Bannister and what it means to us and soccer in this country.

Espinoza Earns First Cap/USA Tomorrow on FSC

Last night, Honduras-born Roger Espinoza made his first career appearance for his native land in a 2-1 win over Belize in the 2009 UNCAF Nations Cup. Congrats to Roger! We'll have to get some thoughts from him and share them with you soon. If you speak some Spanish, check out this and this link from the match. For the full tournament schedule, read our release at kcwizards.com.

Don't forget, the U.S. Men play tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. CT on Fox Soccer Channel. Our boy Jack Jewsbury is still with the squad and hoping to be part of tomorrow's 18-man gameday roster. Bob Bradley's picks won't be known until just before gametime tomorrow. For more, check out www.ussoccer.com.

I Didn't Know News Stations Used YouTube

But they do:

 Big, Busy Day

Kansas City Councilmember John Sharp speaks to media about the impact The Trails will have.

Some of you may have heard that a little demolition started at Bannister Mall yesterday. What a sight for sore eyes! Here's a link to the press release issued yesterday by us and Lane 4, the project's developer, and a link to the photo gallery up at kcwizards.com. Later today we'll link all the news coverage of the event. So far we've found 26 different stories or postings about the demolition. Some are very short (a one-sentence posting from the KC Star), and other are long (a 2 minute, 30 second package from KMBC 9), but they're all great.

Also, Matt Besler got some fun coverage from both KMBC 9 and the KC Star. Check out the story from Channel 9 here and the KC Star story here (that also focuses on Adam Cristman) and KC Star video here.

James P Conrad Does Facebook Interview with SF

Two of the funniest people in American soccer, Jimmy Conrad and SF of The Offside Rules got together for a published Facebook chat. Hilarious and ridiculous.

 Training Today

Hillcrest made it out to training today for the first time in 2009. It was a fairly nice day, so that was a pleasant surprise. The guys started with the usual fitness warm up then a passing/keep-away drill for the field players and catching drills for the goalies. New goalkeeper coach John Pascarella was there watching the 'keepers first hand for one of the first times. Check out some pics below:

New Goalkeeper/Fitness Coach John Pascarella leads the team in warm-ups.

Kevin Souter, or someone else I can't ID in this pic, crosses the ball during a keep-away drill. On second thought, maybe that's Matt Marquess.

Mikey warms up before practice. By the way ladies, he's single. Who should he date? We'll explore that more later.

Pascarella works with the goalkeepers, including Boris Pardo. Check out that SWEET orange ball. I hope we have a snow game so we see those in action.

 Meet Doug DeMartin

Through two days of practice, what is the major difference between college soccer and MLS?
Obviously the speed of play is much faster here. Every thing is quicker; you’re closed down faster. The quality of all the players is much better. Here, everyone is a great player. It makes the game more fun.

What are your off field past times?
I like to read. I just went to the bookstore—Barnes and Noble—yesterday because I don’t really have a lot to do here yet. I also like to play video games.

Who were your favorite players growing up?
I like watching guys like Fernando Torres and (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic from Inter. It is pretty unbelievable what they can do. They make it a lot of fun to watch.

What was your college major and how much school do you have left?
I studied finance. I actually graduated in December, so I’m all done.

After your career is over, will you get back into the finance world or stick with soccer?
I don’t know. Hopefully that’s a long way off. I might get back into the finance world. I like the numbers and you can make a lot of money, but hopefully I’ll be in soccer for a long time.

Spiderman or Batman?
Batman

As a Michigan State alum and local kid, Mateen Cleaves or Drew Neitzel?
I’ve got to say Cleaves. He won the National Championship, but I like Neitzel a lot too.

Playstation, Xbox or Wii?
Xbox for sure

FIFA 2009 or Pro Evolution Soccer?
FIFA

 Best Draft Speech Ever

Head to about the 4 minute mark and watch as Richard Jata of Campbell University delivers his speech at the MLS SuperDraft. Jata was on hand for the draft but ended up sliding all the way down to pick 58, second from the last pick. He still got up and spoke. And it was hilarious--and kinda touching too. He speaks at about the 4 minute mark if you don't want to watch all of Extra Time.

 Souter, Marquess Win Beep Tests

Souter celebrates winning the beep test by trying to stay warm.

Adam Cristman does some individual ballwork today.

Training started this morning, with midfielder Kevin Souter and defender Matt Marquess winning their heats of the infamous "beep test" fitness test. Jimmy Conrad came in second during the first heat, while Kurt Morsink was second in the second heat. Great job to you four for coming in at top conditioning. After the beep test, the players competed in several half-field matches. Practice lasted about two hours in the cold weather.

New draft pick Matt Besler made his first appearance in front of the local media, and recently acquired forward Adam Cristman was also available for the first time. Cristman is still re-habbing a foot injury, so he did mostly individual work and wasn't a part of the beep test or mini games. Training will be at Swope again tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m. CT now. Originally practice was scheduled for 10 but will be bumped back an hour to help find some slightly warmer weather.

We just got word today that Roger Espinoza has been retained by the Honduras National Team for the upcoming UNCAF Cup, which kicks off Thursday. We'll get you more info on that when we get it. As you know, Jack Jewsbury is still with the U.S. squad. Hopefully he'll make the gameday roster for this Saturday's match against Sweden at the Home Depot Center. We'll let you know when we hear.

Sweetin Makes ESPN RISE All-America Squad

KCW Juniors U18 player ANDRockhurst High School star Alex Sweetin has been named to the ESPN RISE All-America first team for his season that included 26 goals and 25 assists. Sweetin was a part of the inaugural KCW Juniors U17 team that finished as the runners up in the 2007 Soccer United Marketing Cup, just weeks after the team was formed. He has committed to attend St. Louis University in the fall, Jack Jewsbury's college team.

Also making the cut were two other KCW Juniors U18 players. Ethan Bauer, foward from Olathe South made the third team list and goalkeeper Christian Krueger, also of Rockhurst, earned an honorable mention nod. Bauer will attend Tulsa next year to play soccer. Krueger is still undecided. Sweetin and Krueger helped lead Rockhurst to the Missouri state championship this season. Congrats to all three members of the KCW Juniors.

 Conrad, Hartman Lend Helping Hand

This weekend, Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman appeared in Orlando, Florida at a Nothing But Nets event at the Disney Wide World of Sports. They signed autographs, led a skills demonstration and attended a private meet and greet for members of 3v3 teams who raised the most this year for Nothing But Nets, the foundation led by Diego Gutierrez. Read this write-up from MLSnet.com and kcwizards.com

 Training Starts Tomorrow at Swope

Greetings Hillcrest Road followers. The 2009 season is already upon us, as Wizards training kicks off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT on the turf field (field 3) at our beautiful Swope Park Training Center. All sessions are open to the public, so if you're off work, head on over to see the first training session of the new year in person. Hillcrest Road will be out there to file some reports and chat with some of the new guys.

Jack Jewsbury (USA Camp), Roger Espinoza (Honduras Camp), Graham Zusi and Akeem Priestley won't yet be in town, so you won't see them. Trade acquisition Adam Cristman and 1st round pick Matt Besler will be there, however, so you'll get to see a couple of our new faces up close. Training will continue Wednesday and Thursday this week. Sessions are scheduled for Swope, but extreme conditions could force the coaching staff to move practice to KC Sports Lodge. If that happens, we'll let you know.

Check out this blurb on Doug DeMartin from the Lansing, MI paper.

 SuperDraft Quotes

Matt Besler with the Don.

Wow, welcomed home by snow! Nice...unless you're driving. Here are quotes from PV and Coach and all of the new picks. We're excited about the group, and they seem pretty happy about joining our squad and fighting for a spot:

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS TECHNICAL DIRECTOR PETER VERMES
On the draft as a whole

“In the end I think we had a good draft. Matt Besler was a guy we really wanted with our number one pick, so that was important. We got some other very talented players as well, and those guys will get a chance to show us that they can make the team.”

On the selection of defender Matt Besler in Round 1
“Besler is a guy we’ve had pegged for quite awhile. He’s trained with us before, and we were in a great position to try to get him. We were getting a little concerned because we knew there were a few other teams that wanted to draft him. He’s a Kansas City guy and we took notice to him a long time ago. That really helped us in the evaluation process.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the selection of Besler

“We lost Tyson Wahl through the expansion draft and needed to fill a void in central defense. We rated Matt Besler as one of the top defenders coming out and we think he has a bright future. We look forward to him coming in and competing with Aaron Hohlbein for a (starting) spot.”

1ST ROUND SELECTION MATT BESLER (NOTRE DAME)
On his selection and playing with Jimmy Conrad
“It’s so exciting to be picked by my hometown team. I’ve watched the Wizards since I was a kid. I can’t wait to start training and get to know the guys. Jimmy Conrad called me right after I was drafted. He is one of the guys I respect the most, and he’s going to be a great teacher for me.”

2ND ROUND SELECTION DOUG DeMARTIN (MICHIGAN STATE)
On joining the Wizards and his style of play
“Having Rauwshan McKenzie in Kansas City is a cool thing since he’s a fellow Michigan State guy. Overall I’m just really excited. This is a great opportunity and I can’t wait to get a chance to play. I’m a player that likes to score goals and play high. I’m a good athlete, and I’m really excited to start my career with the Wizards.”

2ND ROUND SELECTION GRAHAM ZUSI (MARYLAND)
On the Wizards and his style of play

“I’m very excited about going to Kansas City. They have a great program with great coaches and a great administration. I’m looking forward to going to camp next week and looking to make the team and make an impact. I’m a utility player that will work hard to get into the attack and either score goals or set up goals.”

3RD ROUND SELECTION NEAL KITSON (ST. JOHN’S)
On joining Kansas City

“It's a tremendous honor to be drafted in the MLS draft. The Wizards are one of the best clubs in the league. I look forward to giving my all to the club and hopefully bringing a bunch of trophies to Kansas City.”

4TH ROUND SELECTION AKEEM PRIESTLEY (CONNECTICUT)
On being drafted by the Wizards

“I think it's a great opportunity for me, and I'm going to make the best of it. I want to thank the Kansas City Wizards for giving me this chance. I look forward to working hard to make the team and play in front of their fans.”

Kansas City Drafts GK Neal Kitson of St. John's, Akeem Priestley of Connecticut

Kitson

Priestley

With the 42nd overall selection, Kansas City has selected goalkeeper Neal Kitson of St. John's University. Kitson was a two-year starter for St. John's and had the 5th best GAA in college soccer last season (0.48). He was named to the 2008 ESPN All-American XI and to the NCAA Men's College Cup All-Tournament Team. Welcome to Kansas City, Mr. Kitson. Before joining St. John's, Kitson led Dowling College to a 17-2-5 record in 2004, stopping 70 shots along the way.

With the 50th overall selection, the Wizards grabbed midfielder Akeem Priestley of UConn. Priestley has been capped by the Jamaican National Team and scored 22 goals with 27 assists at Jacksonville (one year) and UConn (three years). He was twice named to the All-Big East second team (2006 and 2007). Priestley follows Shavar Thomas as Wizards with Jamaican National Team experience.

Wizards Grab DeMartin, Zusi in 2nd Round

Graham Zusi holds aloft the 2008 National Championship trophy. Zusi scored the game-winner in a 1-0 Maryland win.

With the Wizards 2nd and 3rd picks (#s 22 and 23 overall), Kansas City selected forward Doug DeMartin of Michigan State and midfielder/forward Graham Zusi of Maryland. Demartin was the 2008 Big Ten Player of the Year. In 2007, he was a first-team All-Big Ten performer. Zusi was the 2008 College Cup most Outstanding Offensive Player, scoring the lone goal in Maryland's 1-0 victory over North Carolina in the National Title match. He won two national titles while at Maryland (2005 and 2008).

Zusi had 28 goals and 20 assists in 89 career games. DeMartin had 38 career goals and 9 career assists, including 17 goals this season. Both players are 22.

Wizards Take Blue Valley West Grad Matt Besler

Besler does an interview with Metro Sports.

Wow, what an exciting day! Matt Besler, Blue Valley West grad and former KCFC Alliance player, is now a member of the Kansas City Wizards. Besler grew up in Overland Park, helping BVW to a 5A state championship in his senior year (2005). He then went on to Notre Dame where he was a standout center back. He was an NSCAA first team All-American following his senior season this year and was named to three All-Big-East squads. He was also a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award National Finalist.

In talking with Matt's father, Hillcrest Road learned that Matt almost chose a gold tie to wear to the draft today. He changed his mind at the last minute, instead putting on a blue tie that fits right in with Wizards colors. Well done, sir.

Don't forget, the Wizards are up again at picks 22 and 23 in the second round.

 It's Almost Time

So, we're about 70 minutes from go time. The media is starting to set up shop and prepare their stories. No trades have gone down yet, but that doesn't mean that there won't be any. Some 17 players are at the draft preceedings today, so there's a pretty good chances that whomever we draft in round 1 (and possibly round 2 as well) will be here.

Make sure to tune into ESPN 2 at 1 p.m. CT for their one-hour window of coverage. After that, head over to www.mlsnet.com for further live coverage, player bio info and more.

 24 Hours and Counting

Chance Myers holds up our then-new jersey at last year's SuperDraft. Thanks to Andy Mead for the photo.

The draft is scheduled to start in about 23 hours and 40 minutes, so at this time tomorrow, you'll know what happened with the first few selections. If you haven't yet got your draft fix, head over to www.mlsnet.com for several videos done on prospective draft picks. If that's not enough, click this link (it's a PDF) to head to the bio page for many of the eligible draftees.

We've done pretty well in the last few drafts, getting Michael Harrington (full-time starter), Aaron Hohlbein (part-time starter so far), Kurt Morsink (part-time starter, top reserve), Chance Myers (sick most of last year, very talented player), Roger Espinoza (one of the leading rookies and now doing well at Honduras National Team camp) and Jonathan Leathers (part-time starter last year) over the past two seasons. Hopefully we keep up the trend. We currently have five picks. One in the first (8th), two in the second (22nd and 23rd), one in the third (42nd) and one in the fourth (either the 50th or 53rd).

Any media reading this: if you're looking for interviews tomorrow, get ahold of Dave Borchardt in our PR department. He'll be facilitating all of this as we scramble around frantically to meet our new guy (if he's here in person) or chat with them on the phone. Make sure to check Hillcrest Road the blog, and our Hillcrest Road Twitter (www.twitter.com/hillcrest_road) for updates throughout the day.

 Jack Speaks to USSoccer.com

Check out Jack Jewsbury starring in the latest video from U.S. Soccer's current National Team camp. Jack talks about adjusting to the National Team level and some other fun nuggets.

Apologies for the lack of posts earlier in the day, we're at the PR League meetings. Hopefully the new look of the blog has kept you busy and entertained. If you're wanting some SuperDraft talk, check out Steve Davis' team-by-team breakdown of how things might go Thursday here in St. Louis.

Also, for you Spanish speakers out there, look at this great article on midfielder Roger Espinoza and his current camp with the Honduran National Team in Miami.

 On the Road Again

The PR staff is leaving for St. Louis in a few short minutes (driving, not flying....ROAD TRIP), so Hillcrest will be a little quiet this afternoon. Keep commenting either on this post or the one below about the new look. We love your feedback and suggestions.

If you're interested in hearing about the MLS Combine (off day today, then games again tomorrow) from Ft. Lauderdale, check out Soccernet's take here, Ives' take here or Buzz Carrick's take over at 3rddegree.net. There are also reports after each session at MLSnet.com.

 New Hillcrest Road is Here

Take a look around, tell us what you think. You'll notice after clicking onto the page a couple of times that the picture in the upper-right of the page rotates. Enjoy that, and be ready for some wacky things to pop up once in a while. If you're known for standing, screaming and celebrating wildly, you just might show up here as part of the Hillcrest Road layout.

The new search bar on the right searches former Hillcrest Road posts. If you remember something cool you saw here a few months ago, put in some words and click search. If you're a good searcher, you should be able to find it. Also, the "About Hillcrest Road" link a little further down links back to the first-ever post to explain who we are and what we're doing here.

Comment below your thoughts on the new look.

NOTE: So far, we've determined that this page runs best in Firefox. Internet Explorer should be version 7.0 or better for best results. It also works nicely on Google's Chrome and Opera. Safari should be golden as well. Man, that's a lot of browsers.

Piojo Lopez Re-Signs Without DP Tag

Piojo at last year's unveiling in Buenos Aires.

As you may have seen at the KC Star, or at ESPN Soccernet, or at Soccer By Ives or at ESPN Deportes, Claudio Lopez has re-signed with MLS and Kansas City. Lopez became Kansas City's first-ever Designated Player last season, but has re-signed for a figure that does not require the DP tag for 2009. Per League and club policy, we don't release salary numbers. Official release will come out tomorrow, but this story is already making news, so I figured we'd aggregate it here.

Claudio scored six goals with seven assists last year in MLS play. He played in 28 games, starting 25. He added one more goal and two assists in U.S. Open Cup play. What do you think of Claudio coming back? Let us know below.

 Jewsbury Answers Your Questions

You guys posted questions for Jack Jewsbury. Now he answers them:

Q: What's one player from the Wizards that you felt was deserving of being called into the camp?
A: It’s hard to pick just one out of a group of guys that has played so well together over the last year or so. I would say two that stand out are probably Jimmy Conrad and Davy Arnaud. They both have previous experience with the national team. I’m sure they will have both played at this level sooner or later.

Q: How's the training with the US team different then training with the Wizards?
A: The intensity on a day-to-day basis is higher because everyone is trying to show the coaching staff what they can do and that they can play at the national team level. Because of that, the speed of play is higher and your decision-making has to be quicker.

Q: How do you see the Wizards doing next season?
A: I think that’s a pretty easy question to answer. We showed at the end of last year our character once we were able to field a consistent line-up. The bottom line in this game is results, so we have to get results. Last year was a good starting point, now we just need to add few more pieces and be more consistent. We had streaks at the beginning and end of last season. This year we have to make sure we don’t drop as many points through that middle part.

Q: What was your initial reaction to being invited to the USMNT Camp? Did you cry for joy? Did you jump on the bed with excitement? Did you drop and break your cell phone out of shock? Give us those juicy details.
A: I don’t think I really have any juicy details, but it was very exciting. I had heard that it was a possibility I’d be called into this camp, but you never know until that final list comes out. It’s quite an honor to be called in, I just hope I represent myself and the Wizards well while I’m here.

Q: What players did you model yourself after as a youth?
A: Zinedine Zidane. It seemed like he always made the game easier both for himself and for those around him. He always did the simple things perfect every time to make his teammates better, but he also showed individual moments of brilliance that could help his team win a game.

Q: What aspect of your game do you need to improve on to become a starter in South Africa 2010?
A: It’s probably a little early to start thinking about 2010. I think that my communication can improve now that I’ve kind of found a home as a defensive midfielder. That is something that Kerry Zavagnin did very well. I need to continue to improve as the year goes on. It would be foolish of me to look ahead to 2010 already during my first chance with the National Team, I’m just focusing on being consistent and having a good camp.

Q: Is U.S. Assistant Mike Sorber offering any tips to a fellow Billiken?
A: It’s nice to have a familiar face around since I played for Coach Sorber for two years at St. Louis. He’s pointed out a couple of things for me to focus on while I’m here at camp. Hopefully I can improve steadily at those things over the course of my time hear to make an impression with the U.S. coaches and come back to the Wizards as an improved player.

Q: I'd like to know what Jack does to prepare for games. Music, video games, etc.
A: I’m not the most superstitious guy in the world, so I don’t really have a pre-game ritual. I usually eat a decent sized breakfast then eat a big meal four hours before the game. Other than that, I don’t do anything in terms of music or anything else. I might listen to one thing before one game but not before the next. I’m kind of boring on that front.

 Staff in Florida/Blanco Re-Signs

Blanco v. Hartman last year.

The Wizards Technical Staff, including Technical Director Peter Vermes, Head Coach Curt Onalfo, Assistant Coach Kris Kelderman and Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin (that's kind of weird to type), are in Ft. Lauderdale, FL tonight preparing for the start of the 2009 adidas MLS Player Combine. Read the combine rosters and game schedules here. If you're wondering about what some people think will happen in next Thursday's SuperDraft (1 p.m. CT live on ESPN 2 for the first hour), read mock draft version 4.0 from Ives Galarcep. MLSdraft.net also has some interesting tidbits about several players heading into combine and draft week.

Also, good/bad news out of Chicago. Good news is that attacking midfielder/forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco has re-signed with the Chicago Fire, which will keep Major League Soccer front of mind for many Mexican soccer fans in Mexico and Mexican-American fans here in the U.S. Bad news is that Cuauhtemoc Blanco re-signed with the Fire, which will make them a tougher team to beat than if he left. Oh well, we'll get them anyway.

Heineman's Family Featured/Funny (Cristiano) Ronaldo Note

Wizards owner and President Robb Heineman comes from a family that knows sports. Read this story about his father Greg and brother Mike who are co-owners of the Sioux Falls SkyForce in the NBA Developmental League. Read the story here and enjoy.

Also, check out this note about Cristiano Ronaldo's crash yesterday from Ron Griffith in the UK via our VP of Operations Chris Wyche:
Poor old Cristiano Ronaldo. He crashed his $360,000 Ferrari 599 GTB rounding a corner in a tunnel wall on his way to training at Manchester United training at Carrington on the road tunnel under the runway at Manchester Airport. Fortunately he has 8 other luxury sports cars valued at $6 million, and he was uninjured. When the police arrived, he got out of the car and rolled around three times grasping at his ankle even though he was not hurt, then got up and told the police the wall of the tunnel should have been back 10 yards. The policeman replied that he was shocked a player on $280,000 a week couldn't take a corner.

Wizards are Huge in Ridgefield, CT/Re-Design Coming

So, I bet you didn't know the Wizards were big news in Ridgefield, CT. Well, we are. We're a big deal everywhere, to be honest, but we're a bigger deal in this town. Why? Well, head man Curt Onalfo hails from Ridgefield. Check out this 2009 wish list from Onalfo's hometown paper that includes an MLS Cup ring for one of its sons.

With the one-year anniversary of Hillcrest Road just around the corner, we decided it was time to spice up the site a little bit with a new look and feel. We're working out the last-minute kinks and making sure we're confident that everyone will enjoy the new design. The goal is to launch the new look on Monday, so be ready. If there is a new feature you're desperately looking for, let us know below in the comments section. Now is the time to get it done.

Also, don't forget to post a question for Wizards midfielder Jack Jewsbury in the comments section of the story below. We have a handful, but we want to real hit Jack hard with the interrogation come tomorrow afternoon when we chat. Post last-minute questions up until noon tomorrow.

Jewsbury Appears (Briefly) in U.S. Soccer Vid/Ask Him Questions

Check out Jackie J's couple of brief shots in this video from U.S. Soccer. If the video doesn't load right away when you get to the site, make sure the pull-down menu is set to "U.S. MNT Training Camp - January 2009" then double click on "MNT Back in Camp".

Also, we're going to do a question/answer session with Jack here at Hillcrest Road. Submit your questions below in the comments section. Want to know how the off-season went? Ask. Want to know how Bob Bradley runs a camp? Ask. Want to know how much Jack loves getting asked about going to the same high school as Brad Pitt? Ask that too, though he might not answer.

 Captain KC Featured at Soccer365

It's a good one, ranging from his role with the Wizards (back line marshal) to his role with the U.S. National Team (always ready) to his rumored moves to Europe after the '06 World Cup (a couple were close) to his post-playing days (coaching or writing/talking?). Greg Seltzer over at Soccer365 basically covered it all. Read and enjoy.

Generation adidas Class Announced/Gutierrez Honored by U.S. President

Diego Gutierrez from his KC days.

MLS put out the list of Generation adidas players today. The nine players represent seven different schools and are broken down into three forwards, three defenders, two midfielders and one goalkeeper. Read the MLS release and the complete list of 2009 adidas Player Combine teams here.

Former Wizards midfielder Diego Gutierrez was selected by President Bush to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Read the details from Luis Arroyave. Congrats to Diego, that's a pretty big honor.

 Vote for Soccer By Ives

I wouldn't normally pump up someone else's blog specifically, but when a soccer blog is up against some of the best from the other big sports in the U.S. for a major award like the Best Sports Blog from the 2008 Weblog Awards, I feel it's time to change the rules a little bit. Ives Galarcep and his in-depth news blog Soccer By Ives is in the final 15 against some of the biggest sports blogs from other American sports. Improve your fanhood score and go vote for a fellow footie lover!

Pair of Wizards Receive "All-American" Honorable Mention

Greg Seltzer of Soccer365 and his own blog, No Short Corners, recently posted his "All-American" team of 2008. The team, judged by him to be the best-performing of all American players-regardless of the League-in 2008, included some usual suspects (Oguchi Onyewu, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan) and some new faces (Charles Kazlauskas, Charlie Davies). In the honorable mention section, Seltzer included standout Wizards defenders Jimmy Conrad and Michael Harrington. The list is a who's-who of American soccer stars, so scoring two players on the team is quite an accomplishment. Read the entire list here over at Soccer365.

Espinoza Writes from Camp/Jewsbury Talks Christmas

Jewsbury and Espinoza celebrate together after Jack's early-season goal against the Chicago Fire. The face on that lady above Jack's left shoulder is classic.

Roger Espinoza got back with us last night via email from his time in Miami, Fl with the Honduras National Team. Here is what he said about his time with the squad so far:

So far it’s looking good. We have just been doing fitness for the most part. The practices are tough, but I'm doing pretty well in my opinion. We are practicing two times a day, and sometimes we do three sessions a day. In the morning, we run. In the afternoon, we do some tactics and how the team works, and we are getting prepare for the friendly against Chile on the 18th of January here in Miami. The coach hasn't talked to me yet about my role or had meetings with the other players. I feel that I interact with the team pretty well, and if I keep working hard, things will go my way.

The Men's National Team blog put up a list of what some players in camp gave to other people in their lives and what they received for Christmas. Jewsbury is featured, relating specifically to the child he and wife Brittany are expecting. Read it here.

 Monday Wrap-Up

First, former Wizards forward Chris Brown retired from the game over the weekend. Good luck to you after your career, Chris.

Second, follow the U.S. Men's National Team camp through U.S. Soccer's Men's National Team blog at www.mnt-ussoccer.blogspot.com. Jack Jewsbury and the boys kicked off the camp today with some technical and conditioning work, then went for physicals after lunch. We'll look to have Jewsbury and fellow Wizards midfielder Roger Espinoza check in soon here at Hillcrest Road for you fans.

Third, don't yet buy tickets to the upcoming World Cup Qualifier between the United States and Mexico. Tickets aren't yet on sale, though they've been popping up at Stub Hub for crazy-high prices. Don't buy them yet.

Finally, the MLS SuperDraft comes next Thursday from St. Louis and will be shown live on ESPN 2 from 1 p.m. CT - 2 p.m. CT. Read the MLS press release about the event here. The adidas Player Combine begins this Friday in Ft. Lauderdale. The Wizards Technical Staff will be there.

 New-Look ESPN.com

ESPN.com launched a new-look page design that includes a much more user-friendly look. It is also much more soccer-friendly, as "soccer" is listed as the fourth choice along the upper sport menu bar, ahead of NCAA Football, NCAA Basketball and the NHL. Clicking the "soccer" link takes you to the ESPNSoccernet home page that focuses primarily on the English Premier League and European action. MLS and U.S. Soccer is a primary focus of Soccernet as well, however, and the heavy prominence on ESPN.com is a great thing for the sport in general in this country.

On another note, ESPN has put together a gallery of former ESPN.com themes that is pretty entertaining to scroll through. This is a pretty fun scroll through memory lane.

Conrad Gets Team of the Year Nod/Streeter's Predictions

Hartman makes a list of the top 50 players in MLS put together by a Toronto FC fan.

Allen Ramsey over at Goal.com came up with his MLS Team of the Season yesterday. Captain Kansas City made the list at center back alongside Chad Marshall for his stellar season both guiding the Wizards defense and pushing forward to score six goals. Well done, Jimmy.

Also David Streeter of the Topeka Capital-Journal came up with his predictions for 2009. I think you'll like his pick for MLS Cup. Read up.

In other news, a TFC fan blogger came up with his 50 players of MLS. Kevin Hartman and Jimmy Conrad make his list from KC. I'd add Davy Arnaud and Claudio Lopez to the list (and probably Harrington and Jewsbury too), but it's an interesting starting spot. Check it out and offer him your comments.

Welcome to 2009 and year two of Hillcrest Road. Hopefully the second season was just as fun and useful as the first.
