Wizards Pick up Draft Pick From Revs

We've just finalized a deal with New England that brings us the Revs' natural 3rd round SuperDraft selection in exchange for an international roster spot. NE will keep that spot until Jan. 1, 2011. We're currently at 6 int'l spots (each US-based team starts at 8 before trades) after sending one to RSL in 2007. We get that one back Jan. 1, 2010. We've got three internationals currently on the roster: midfielder Santiago Hirsig (Argentina), forward Claudio Lopez (Argentina) and midfielder Kevin Souter (Scotland).

As you know, Roger Espinoza is from Honduras, but he has his paperwork and does not count as an international player by League standards. This is the second trade we've done with NE recently after acquiring Adam Cristman (who is nearing return from a broken toe suffered in preseason) last year just prior to Seattle's expansion draft.

 ESPN World Cup Coverage

Just a few hours after The Sporting Blog (blog on the Sporting News' website) called out ESPN for not sending announcers to the Confed Cup, ESPN responded (well, probably more like announced on their own without regard for being called out) by laying out some details for next summer's coverage of the World Cup. The names Chris Fowler, Bob Ley and Mike Tirico excite me. Hopefully they excite you too.

There are a slew of other Confed Cup related articles out there today, including this one from Greg Seltzer ranking the players. This one about Charlie Davies and the clubs chasing after him. And this less-related one about Edgar Castillo (left mid, left back) being willing to play for the USA after appearing for Mexico at the U-23 level. That would be an interesting change of heart for the New Mexico-born player, wouldn't it?

We're now in Minneapolis for tomorrow's U.S. Open Cup match against the Minnesota Thunder. You'll be able to watch the game live at USLlive.com or by following along with the running commentary here at Hillcrest Road. Better yet, set up two computers and follow both!

Quotes:
KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the game
"It was disappointing...very disappointing. Especially when you feel like you have a chance to tie the game late. They (Santos Laguna) are an excellent team. They're traditionally one of the best teams in Mexico and have some pretty darn good players. It's a luxury to being able to bring a national team midfielder in Arce to defend a lead at the end of the game. We came out and tried to win the game. Obviously, we fell behind and we kept pushing the game and went forward because we wanted to make sure we did that. However, sometimes you become vulnerable. You have to credit Santos for taking advantage of those (counter-attack) situations. Having said that, we had plenty of chances to put the ball in the back of the net and hit a couple off the cross bar."

On the sellout crowd Sunday
“Obviously it was a very passionate crowd tonight. I think we saw a lot of new faces in the crowd, and hopefully they enjoyed the game and will come back and support us next time we play at home.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER KEVIN HARTMAN
On the changes in defense during the game
“It's a big tournament so you expect those kind of things. We're going to put players that give us the chance to get through to the next round out there. That being said, those are the guys who have gotten results throughout the tournament and in the previous game against New England. Jack Jewsbury was the defender of the year for us last season, so he's going to be able to get in there and get results for us. Unfortunately we weren't able to beat a very good Santos Laguna team.”

On the game
“There were times when we didn't necessarily take care of the basics, and they were able to score as a result.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On joining the U.S. National Team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup
“I'm honored to be called to the Gold Cup. A breakthrough event (in my career) was in 2005 for the Gold Cup. It has a special place in my heart. We've got a young roster. Obviously, we're going to build off the success from the Confederations Cup, and it should be a good time. We're the favorites, so there is a little bit of pressure. I like our squad, and I like our guys. There's a good vibe around U.S. Soccer right now and hopefully we can parlay that into a Gold Cup Championship.”

SANTOS LAGUNA HEAD COACH SERGIO BUENO
On scoring three goals in the final group-play game
A: Well yes, it took a while for us to score the goals. I think we had various offensive chances to convert earlier but the goals came at an opportune time.

On his team’s chances of winning SuperLiga
“Well, we are going to try. We think that we can. The most important thing is that we want to win, so we will see if we are able to do so.”

On the Santos fans in attendance
“It’s a nice surprise that so many people have shown up to cheer on the team, and it’s just great for us.”

 Watch Parties Sunday/MIN USOC Game

Many of you have probably seen the Facebook event set up for a watch party Sunday at Hooters across from CAB for the USA's epic battle against Brazil for the Confederations Cup title. Ok, maybe epic battle is a bit much, but it should be a great game for U.S. fans, no? The game starts at 1:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ESPN. There will be a half-hour pregame show as well, if you're interested in that.

If Hooters gets too full or isn't your pick of an eating/drinking establishment, feel free to join groups at Cleatz Bar and Grill at the Legends. The Cleatz party will feature half-off appetizers, buckets $15, $4 bomb shots, $2 wells and $1 soco lime shots. Also, feel free to stop by one of the 810 Zones if you will have time to make it to the stadium afterward for our match. They're always happy to turn the game on.

Also, we just got confirmation that Tuesday's match will be broadcast live at USLlive.com. Make sure you have the computer handy. There is no charge to watch the game, but you must register for a free account.

 Kansas City College Showcase

This went out in our weekly update this week, but we wanted to make sure everyone is aware. We'll be co-hosting a college showcase July 25-26 at our Swope Park Training Center and William Jewell College. Details:

The Kansas City Wizards, Raytown Soccer Club and William Jewell College will host the 2nd annual Kansas City College Showcase July 25-26. The event will take place at William Jewell College and the Wizards’ Swope Park Training Center. KCW Juniors U-16 and U-18 teams will take part in the showcase. Registration costs $800 per team and includes a voucher for a Kansas City Wizards ticket during the 2009 season. Each team will play three games in the showcase, with at least one taking place at the Kansas City Wizards training facility. To register for the tournament, follow this link.

 SuperLiga (Group Stage) Finale

As most of you know, we play Santos Laguna to wrap up SuperLiga group play. Don't forget that the match is Special Game A for season ticket holders. A win will clinch our advancement. If we tie and New England beats Atlas, we are also through. Here are the rest of the scenarios:

The winner between Revolution v Atlas will qualify for the semifinals. If the Revolution-Atlas match is a tie, then the Revs will qualify for the semifinals. The only way the Revolution cannot be in the semifinals is if Atlas and Kansas City both win.

If NE wins, and KC wins, then NE (1) and KC (2) are in the semis
If NE wins, and SAN wins, then NE (1) and SAN (2) are in the semis
If NE wins, and KC-SAN tie, then NE (1) and KC (2) are in the semis

If ATS wins, and KC wins, then ATS and KC are in the semis. The group placings will be decided by the respective margin of victories (each have 0 GD right now).
If ATS wins, and SAN wins, then ATS (1) and NE (2) are in the semis (NE on HTH)
If ATS wins, and KC-SAN tie, then ATS (1) and NE (2) are in the semis

If NE-ATS is a tie, and KC wins, then NE and KC are in the semis. KC will win the group if they win by three goals or more, or if they win by a 4-2 score, the group winner will be decided by coinflip.
If NE-ATS is a tie, and SAN wins, then NE (1) and SAN (2) are in the semis
If NE-ATS is a tie, and KC-SAN tie, then NE (1) is in the semis. KC and ATS will be tied with 3 pts and 0 GD; the winner of the group will be decided on goals scored (now: KC 1 GF; ATS 0 GF).

 Great Read on U.S. Soccer

We've been National-Team centric around here lately, but that's ok right? It's that time of year. I wanted to post a story from Stefan Fatsis at Sports Illustrated. As you read in the article, Fatsis is a big U.S. Soccer fan, though he doesn't currently regularly write about the sport (perhaps that's on purpose...harder to be a fan when you're reporting on the team). Fatsis goes a little deeper than most and breaks down the Euro-snobbery from a sociopolitical perspective. Enjoy!

Arnaud, Conrad, Espinoza Called to Gold Cup

Arnaud and Conrad will be joining the U.S. National Team for the upcoming Gold Cup.

Reports from Honduras have told us that Espinoza will be on Los Catrachos' Gold Cup team. Today, U.S. Soccer announced that teammates Davy Arnaud and Jimmy Conrad will be joining Espinoza in the competition (and the same group). Arnaud and Conrad will join the U.S. Monday for training in Seattle, while Espinoza will join Honduras after next Tuesday's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match at the Minnesota Thunder (USL-1). Players will rejoin the Wizards two days after their national team is eliminated from the tournament.

The teams kick off the tournament as part of a double header July 4 at Qwest Field in Seattle. Honduras will face Haiti at 6 p.m. CT, while the U.S. will play Grenada at 8 p.m. CT. The teams play one another Wednesday, July 8 at 8 p.m. CT at RFK Stadium in D.C. Group play then wraps up Saturday, July 11 as part of a tripleheader at Gillette Stadium. That day, the Wizards will play the Revolution at 3 p.m. CT. The U.S. will then play Haiti at 6 p.m. CT, with Honduras facing Grenada at 8 p.m. CT. It will be a long day of soccer in Foxborough! For the full Gold Cup schedule, click here.

CONCACAF says of the US:
The two-time defending champion United States has had the benefit of playing all or part of every Gold Cup on home soil since the tournament began in 1991. Besides its four titles, it has finished runner-up twice and never failed to reach the quarterfinals. It qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 40 years when it advanced to Italy in 1990, and has not failed to reach the quadrennial world championship finals since – boosted by the advent of Major League Soccer in 1996. It has become a perennial power in the CONCACAF region at all levels, regularly qualifying for FIFA World Cups in both men’s and women’s competitions. In Gold Cup play, the United States has won 34 of its 43 matches and lost only four, outscoring its opponents 81-26.

CONCACAF says of Honduras:

As one of the top-five finishers in the UNCAF Nations Cup, Honduras, a late host of the event after Panama was unable to secure an adequate stadium, qualified for its ninth Gold Cup. Los Catrachos fell to eventual champion Panama in the semifinals, but came back to defeat El Salvador in the third-place match. Since a third-place finish in the 2001 Copa America, Honduras has been on a steady rise and is now considered one of the top squads in CONCACAF. Only once (2002) has Honduras failed to qualify for the Gold Cup and it reached the quarterfinals in 2007 before being upset by Guadeloupe. Honduras has reached the FIFA World Cup final once, in 1982, and is still alive in the final hexagonal stage.

 USA 2-0 Spain

Then re-read the in-game commentary. This snarky British fella didn't think we stood a chance. Did anyone outside the U.S. locker room?

Wiz Tie Revs, Control SuperLiga Destiny

A win and we're in, we know that. A tie and a Revs win, and we're in. After that, it gets trickier. If we tie and Atlas ties NE, then it comes down to total goals scored (by both being 0-0-3, we'd be even on goal differential at 0). If we're tied on total goals scored, it's a coin flip. Herc has been causing NE a lot of problems hasn't he? He's been responsible for creating two NE own goals in the last two games against them. Nicely down Mr. Gomez.

Notables

· Kansas is now 0-0-2, 2 pts in Group B of SuperLiga 2009.
· The Wizards will secure a berth in the SuperLiga semifinals with a win Sunday against Santos Laguna at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

· The Wizards could advance if both games end in draws, but only if they have scored more total goals than Atlas.
· Kansas City enters Sunday with one goal scored in the tournament, while Atlas has none.
· If the Wizards and Atlas are tied on points and have the same number of total goals, the advancing team will be determined by a coin flip.

· Kansas City is 2-0-1 in those games.

· The final match will be played Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT against the winner of Brazil and South Africa, who play tomorrow.
· The match is scheduled to be shown live on ESPN2.
· The USA is now 3-0-0 in June when playing on the same day as the Wizards.

Quotes:

Kansas City Wizards head coach Curt Onalfo
On whether he was happy with the result
“We just finished playing two games away from home, we have two points, and our destiny’s in our own hands as we go home to Kansas City to play a very good Santos team. Would I have liked to get three points with 11 players against 10? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, the game’s 90 minutes … we got ourselves a late goal, we pushed to almost get another one at the end. We’ll take the point, dust ourselves off, get ourselves regenerated a little bit, as we go home to play Santos on Sunday.”

On his team’s performance
“I think we probably started the game slowly. I was not pleased with the overall first half performance, except for maybe five or six minutes. I thought that we didn’t win enough first and second balls. I think we were lucky to only be down 1-0, honestly. But I thought we regrouped; I thought we fought extremely hard. Obviously they had one less player so they just dropped back. On the wet turf, now all of a sudden you need to be even more precise in your passing, you need to break down low pressure, and that’s something that I thought it took us a while to get used to. But having said that, we finally got our goal and had another chance to get the second, so I thought the second half performance was better than the first.”

On halftime adjustments
“We switched to a 4-3-3, and we wanted to get the ball wide and get some service into the box. Claudio (Lopez) is a very good server of the ball and I thought that when he got the ball in the wide channels we were dangerous. Once we put Herculez (Gomez) on the other side, I thought we started causing issues and we have to do that a little bit quicker and a little bit earlier. But certainly we had a lot of success when we got the ball wide and put service into the box.”

Kansas City Wizards midfielder Herculez Gomez
On how he is feeling after Sunday
“Well obviously, I’m a little embarrassed. I’m from Vegas and it gets pretty hot in Vegas, so that’s the first time that I had heat stroke or symptoms like heat stroke. But I’m definitely excited about the opportunity to play soccer.

On Curt Onalfo giving Herculez the opportunity to play
“Well (Curt Onalfo) told me to get out there, and give us some energy and be effective. So it was an opportunity to play soccer and it’s something we can’t take for granted. It’s one of those games you want to play in. Especially for a player like me, with the elements and the field being wet, you can get at defenders. The game is on turf so the ball bounces a little more. Lately, I’ve been feeling great on these surfaces in front of the goal. These SuperLiga balls are great so I try to take advantage of it.”

What did you see on the goal
“Well Davy (Arnaud) put in a good ball out wide, and I felt the ball getting away from me so I did one of those all or nothing lunges, and I happened to get enough of it to keep it in front of me. So at that point, it’s just getting the ball across the face of the goal and be dangerous with it. You’re not trying to pick out a player, but you’re just trying to get it across the face of the goal, and you hope it goes off one of their guys or one of ours. That’s what you’re instructed to do at that moment and that’s what I did.”

The importance of getting a draw going into Sunday
“Obviously, we’re a little disappointed we didn’t get a better result, but you got to give it to New England. They battled for almost an hour a man down. It’s not an easy thing to do. We’ve seen our fair share of reds this year, but we definitely would have liked to get out of here with more than a point, but we will take a point.”

 ESPN Grabs EPL Rights

ESPN announced today that they have grabbed the rights to 46 English Premier League matches in the UK starting next season and running through the 2012/13 season. ESPN also launched the following website that takes people to a page featuring the image above: http://www.espn.co.uk/. An interesting move by ESPN. Keep an eye out for ESPN's moves in all upcoming soccer rights-fee bidding. It seems like they're making quite the moves.

In other English soccer news, Roque Santa Cruz has rejoined Mark Hughes and moved to Manchester City. With off-season signings of Gareth Barry from American-owned Aston Villa and Cruz, City is positioning itself well to make a push for the top 4 next season. What else might they have in the hopper?

Also, Mr. Obama has accepted an invitation to attend the opening ceremonies of next year's World Cup in South Africa, assuming his schedule doesn't change too much between now and then, of course.

 USA Wins and Advances

You all know this. You've all seen the highlights. Let's watch them again:

Now we play Spain Wednesday at 1:25 p.m. CT on ESPN. Get ready...let's go Red, White and Blue!

Wizards Tie Atlas 0-0 in SuperLiga Opener

Man. It's hot. Like seriously, unbelievably hot. Maybe that's just because the press box isn't air conditioned. But if it feels like this up here, I can't even imagine what it must have felt like running around on the field today. We saw some good bits of soccer from both teams, an outstanding save from Kevin Hartman and a couple of near-misses from Wizards players. Hartman now have five shutouts on the season, and his first-half save after a Dario Bottinelli free kick deserves some serious kudos. Props to the Wizards fans who traveled to St. Louis for the game, including a large, loud section of Cauldronites. They were late to the match because they were watching the finish of the USA-Egypt game that saw the U.S. team move on to the semifinals of the Confederations Cup against Spain on Wednesday. Props also to the U.S. for a gutsy and impressive performance against an Egypt team that scored three goals against Brazil and shutout Italy 1-0.

Quotes:

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the game
“Obviously it was a very hot day: 100 plus degrees on the field. Days like this slow the game down and limit the amount of chances on goal. I thought it took us a little while to adjust to the field and everything else. I thought when Roger came into the game he injected some energy, and I thought we ended the first half strong. It was one of those games that comes down to a chance or two. We have the opportunities you need to put it away, and we had a clear opportunity in the second half that we didn’t convert.”

On Herculez Gomez’s injury
“Herculez was having heat exhaustion type symptoms. He was dizzy and was also hit in the head. We thought it was prudent to make a sub at that point and that’s why we did.”

On Roger Espinoza’s red card
“Roger played a good game and it was unfortunate he got red carded at the end. I don’t believe it was a red card tackle but you can’t give any excuses to an international referee and that’s all a process for a young player like Roger.”

On getting a draw to open SuperLiga
“It gets us a point. We’re in a three-game tournament in which we have two games away from home. We want to position ourselves so that when we come home to face Santos we have the opportunity to advance.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER KEVIN HARTMAN
On the game
“It was hot, and that led to a pretty slow game. I thought that we were pretty disciplined tactically, and unfortunately we weren’t able to get the winner today.”

On earning a draw
“A point can be the difference between making the second round and not making the second round, so we’re proud of the fact that we were able to earn a point. It’s not a situation in a round robin tournament where you get hung up on one game and you forget what the future holds.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS MIDFIELDER JACK JEWSBURY
On the game and on the heat
“Games like this are always tough physically and mentally. As a team I thought we did fairly well with that. It was just a matter of us putting away one of our chances, and unfortunately we weren’t sharp enough around the goal.”

On returning to the stadium where he played college soccer for St. Louis University
“It felt good to be back at Hermann Stadium. I haven’t been here in about seven years now. It’s good to be back. It was great that the fans came out and really supported us despite the heat. I played the first game here when it opened up in 1999. It definitely brings back some great memories, not just the field but also the campus and everything about the university. I had some great years here.”

FC ATLAS HEAD COACH RICARDO LA VOLPE
On the game
“We’re finishing up our preparation for the start of the season, and now we’re in this tournament. Indeed it was very hot today, but the youngsters responded very well. The opponent was a very solid team and it’s all within what we were expecting in order to achieve where we want to be physically before the start of the season.”

 Craziness in St. Louis

First, Jack Jewsbury was delayed twice at KCI waiting for a plane from Colorado. Then, Atlas was delayed by about six hours due to a storm in Chicago. They were scheduled to arrive in St. Louis at around 10:45 last night. Well, they didn't get here until more like 4:45 a.m. Atlas was originally scheduled to train today at 10 a.m., but that was canceled so their players could get some rest. They will now train at 5 p.m. tonight. Our guys are about to train in KC and will arrive in St. Louis just after 2 p.m. There will be media availability at the team hotel for St. Louis media types.

Ready for Father's Day? Jimmy and Kim Conrad are. Read this AP story (run here on SI.com) about our favorite #12, his dad and why they are the way they are. It's a good read.

Another Father's Day tie-in for our guys was reported today in the KC Star by Terez A. Paylor. He relates the story of Herculez Gomez's dad, who grew up in Guadalajara, getting very excited for the Atlas match. Herc's father grew up and Atlas fan and is ready to see his son play the team he used to support.

Speaking of Atlas, here's their roster if you haven't seen it yet:

 Besler Blog II

As you might remember, defender Matt Besler is now blogging at MLS Daily on a weekly basis. Check out entry II of Across the Midwest Pitch. Feel free to comment and let him know what you think. He offers a complete breakdown of what he did last Saturday before/during/after our 3-1 win over New England.

 Deep-Lying Playmakers

Hirsig enjoys incisive passes and Run DMC.

Steve Davis cooked up a little column this week on MLSnet.com about the recent trend in MLS of having a deep-lying playmaker instead of a hard-tackling masher in the holding midfielder role. Davis includes mention of Santiago Hirsig and his calm demeanor on the ball and excellent vision.

Arnaud for Goal of the Week

Once again we have a player in the running for the MLS Goal of the Week honor. Arnaud's finish wasn't the most difficult, but the movement and passing on the goal was top-notch, starting with Herculez Gomez on the left wing. Check out the goal below courtesy of MLS Quick Kicks and then vote for our #22.

A Big Week of International Football

SPOILER ALERT BRAZIL EGYPT

Confederations Cup started yesterday with the 0-0 tie between Iraq and South Africa and the 5-0 shellacking of New Zealand by Spain (Fernando Torres had three goals in the first 17 minutes--nasty). Brazil topped Egypt 4-3 this morning on a late Kaka PK. Kaka scored twice, as did Egypt's Mohamed Zidan. The USA plays Italy this afternoon, with kickoff set for 1:25 p.m. CT on ESPN. Budweiser is sponsoring watch parties at both area 810 Zone locations. The U.S. then returns to action Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. CT against Brazil on ESPN2 (only the 810 Zone in Leawood will open early, and they will be serving breakfast). Our boys then conclude the group stage of the tournament against Egypt Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT again on ESPN2.

Along with Confederations Cup, SuperLiga 2009 brings international competition to MLS clubs starting this Saturday. We kick off this Sunday in St. Louis against Atlas, at 3:30 p.m. CT then travel to face New England again the following Wednesday before hosting Santos Laguna Sunday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. CT at CAB.

Big 3-1 Win Tonight Over New England

The crowd was great, the play was great. We generated a season-high 21 shots and scored a season-high three goals. Lots of props to the crowd tonight in the post-match quotes. Thanks to all of you that came out for our 3rd straight sellout, our 5th of the season. The sellout in a pair of back-to-back games, with the U.S. National Team playing last Saturday and the Royals playing at home tonight is a testament to all of you that come out to the park! Enjoy the notables below. There are a lot, and a lot of interesting ones. Now it's on to SuperLiga. Don't forget to go to Planet Sub tomorrow for the Hat Trick Special. Mention the promotion and you'll receive a Planet Sub Sandwich, chips and a cookie for just $3.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH CURT ONALFO
On the game
“I thought we moved the ball very well. We played good soccer tonight. We had good movement off the ball and precision on our passing. I thought we played well for 90 minutes. We have to have a better record at home, and I think that’s starting to come together. We’re happy to get the three points. We needed three points.

On the high number of shots (38) in the last two games
“We’ve strived to get some consistency. I think our movement is much better. We’ve been moving off the ball extremely well over the last four or five games. The result didn’t come last weekend, but we didn’t make any lineup changes and the guys responded tonight.”

On Davy Arnaud’s goal
“It was pretty. It was good soccer. Those guys all have the ability to do that. Davy’s played his best soccer in the middle of the field. That’s forced Jack to play wide and Jack’s done a good job there too.”

On the sellout crowd at CommunityAmerica Ballpark
“Our fans have been great all year at home. They really got behind the team tonight and helped us to a 3-1 win. Every game, the stands are full and they’re loud all match long. That’s why we love to play here. Our fans really push us to do well.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On the game
“We came out well tonight. We put an emphasis prior to the game on trying to get after them. The first goal was a great goal. We let them back into the game with the goal to make it 1-1. That was disappointing. We take a lot of pride in defending set pieces. After they got the red card, we took advantage of being up a man and we put them away by halftime.”

On the importance of this win
“We talked before the game that if we put the work in now it’s going to make our life easier down the line, as opposed to the last few years waiting until the last few games trying to make the playoffs. We put a big emphasis on that, plus we knew we weren’t going to have any league play for about two weeks and teams are going to have 2-3 games to try and catch us. We wanted to create some cushion between us and some of the other teams, and I thought we did a good job of doing that tonight.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER AARON HOHLBEIN
On his goal
“It was a good corner by Claudio. Josh popped it do the near post and after the deflection Jimmy was there. He put himself and headed it back across. I was in the right place at the right time and I was able to capitalize.”

On the game
“We knew we had to come in and fight tonight. We really needed the three points. It was going to take a strong effort both defensively and offensively. Everyone chipped in and worked hard on the defensive side of the ball. New England has some good attacking guys, and I thought our shape was pretty good and we worked hard for each other.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS MIDFIELDER DAVY ARNAUD
On his goal
“Herculez slipped me a nice ball. I saw Claudio pull out wide, and I slipped to him and I tried to get myself into the box and get into a good spot, and Claudio played a great ball for me to finish.”

On the crowd
“We love playing here at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in front of the Cauldron and the rest of our fans. They are behind us every game and are always loud. We love winning here and sending them home happy.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL
On the game
“There is not a lot of good coming out of tonight. There was a stupid red card. Darrius Barnes got booked for a great tackle. Well, that's not why we lost the game. We lost because we weren't very good. We have no excuses, we didn't do well.”

On trying to come back down 3-1
“Being a man down and 3-1 down away form home. It doesn't get any harder. But I'll give the Wizards credit for the second half, we made them go outside us and didn't let them go through us. In the first half, too many balls were getting through us.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION FORWARD STEVE RALSTON
On the game changing because of the red card
“Yeah, obviously the game is going to change. I didn't see the play. I don't know if it was deserving of a red card or not. We need to do a better job. With 10-15 minutes left in the half, we've got to get to halftime. We just need to get back and defend. We didn't do a good job. We gave up two goals and obviously at that point, it’s a big uphill fight in the second half.

On his assist to Shalrie Joseph
“I just tried to put a dangerous ball to the back of the post. Luckily, Shalrie [Joseph] did a great job and was fortunate enough to put it in.”

On Shalrie Joseph’s play this year as a forward
“He's done really well for us this year. He's been really dangerous and getting a lot of balls in the box.”
