 Retro Night!

That's right everyone, the team formerly known as the Wiz is having retro night. The folks of Hillcrest Syndicate and the other supporters' section that make up the Cauldron are putting on an official retro/throw-back night on Saturday, October 24 as D.C. United comes to town. Wear your old-school Wiz/Wizards gear for the match if you will sit in the section or if you just want to support the old rainbow logos.

 Wizards Clean Up Ruby Park

Today, Wizards players and staff members and children from nearby New Stanley Elementary School took part in a clean-up event at Ruby Park in KCK called "Greener Goals". As part of the event, players and children painted a mural on a concrete wall under a bridge, picked up trash, painted benches, painted lines on a basketball court and played soccer with one another. Everyone had an outstanding time, and Ruby Park came out looking a little spruced up. Here are a couple of pictures. We'll have a full gallery up tomorrow at kcwizards.com.

Defender Jonathan Leathers poses with his clean-up crew.

Forward Kei Kamara gives his team an advantage by hiding the ball in his shirt and racing toward goal.

 USA Wins/International Round-Up

The World Cup trophy is touring Egypt during the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

That's right, the U.S. U-20 National Team rebounded from their 3-0 loss to Germany Saturday with a 4-1 thrashing of Cameroon. The Nats spread the goals around, with Arguez, Taylor, Duka and Ownby all scoring. Duka was the star of the night, however, as the #10 was involved in multiple goals and scored on an amazing chip. Watch the full highlights here from FIFA.com. Read the FIFA.com match report here.

In UEFA Champions League action, Liverpool was upset by Fiorentina, FK Rubin Kazan tied Inter Milan and Sevilla pounded Rangers 4-1. For more scores (including Cardiff City thumping Derby County 6-1), visit the Soccernet scoreboard here.

 Out of the Office

The majority of Wizards staffers will be out of the office for the next 3 hours or so as the entire organization heads to Ruby Park in KCK for a park cleanup activity. Look for some pictures later today and a video tomorrow or Thursday from the event. It should be a fun way to spend some time together as an organization and make a difference for a local green space.

Wizards, Spofford Visit Dick's Sporting Goods

Last week, a handful of Kansas City Wizards players accompanied some kids from local non-profit Spofford on a shopping spree at a local Dick's Sporting Goods. The children were given $100 by DSG to spend on items of their choice, and Wizards players Herculez Gomez, Chance Myers, Graham Zusi and Roger Espinoza joined them to help in the shopping. The kids and players had a great time. Special thanks to DSG for the opportunity and to Zepi's Pizza for donating some food for the children. Hopefully everyone at Spofford enjoyed the outing!

Gomez and Zusi help two children race through the aisles last week at Dick's Sporting Goods.

 Support the USA Bid!

Mr. John Kristick of the USA Bid Committee receives a Kansas City Wizards jersey from David Ficklin and George Brett looks on.

We've said it here many times before, and we won't stop saying it. Please go online and sign the petition to support the USA's (and by extension, Kansas City's) bid to host FIFA World Cup games in 2018 or 2022. Once you sign the petition yourself, share it with your friends and make sure they sign up as well. As Thad told you a while back at The Back Post, USA Bid Committee's John Kristick came to Kansas City two weeks ago for a site visit. We put on a good show. Hopefully Mr. Kristick and the rest of the Bid Committee believe as much as we do that Kansas City is an ideal city to host the world's greatest sporting event.

 Wizards Tie Rapids 0-0 Saturday

After outshooting Colorado 18-12 and controlling most of the possession, the Wizards tied the Rapids tonight 0-0 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Mixed results around the League in terms of our playoff hopes, as the late NE win doesn't help, but the late Chicago tie does. Chivas has scored at the beginning of the second half at home to NY. A win by the goats wouldn't help things either. We're now 3-1-1 in our last five games, all of them in the month of September. Striker Josh Wolff completed his strong month without a goal, leaving int he 65th minute after taking a blow to the nose that would not stop bleeding. Check out the notables and quotes below for more.

· Kansas City is now 19-17-9 all-time against Colorado, including a 15-3-4 record at home.
· The Wizards went 0-1-1 this season against Colorado.
· Kansas City is 3-1-1 in its last five games.
· Peter Vermes is now 3-4-1 as the Interim Head Coach of the Wizards.
· Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman has now started 108 straight games and hasn’t missed any action in the last 9720 minutes his teams have played.
· His minutes-played streak constitutes an MLS record.
· Aug. 1, Hartman became just the 2nd player in MLS history to start 100 straight matches.
· Hartman made three saves Saturday, increasing his career MLS record in saves to 1219.
· Hartman’s shutouts marks his 7th of the season and the 84th of his career, an MLS record for career clean sheets.
· Hartman is the only player to start all 26 games this season for the Wizards and the only player to play every minute of every game this year.
· Hartman played in his 329th career game Saturday.
· He ranks 2nd in League history, trailing only New England’s Steve Ralston (377).
· Newly acquired forward Kei Kamara made his first start for the Wizards, playing the full 90 minutes and generating three shots.
· Kansas City only used one substitution Saturday, and Colorado did not use a single sub.
· One total substitution marks the season low for a game involving the Wizards. The previous low was three combined subs.
· Kansas City was without goalkeeper Eric Kronberg, midfielder Kevin Souter and forward Adam Cristman through injury.
· The USA Bid Committee Inc. announced August 4 that Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium are one of 27 cities and 32 venues, down from 70 initial stadia in 52 cities, on the short list to be included in the United States’ bid to host the FIFA World Cup™ in either 2018 or 2022.
· The Kansas City / USA Host City Bid Committee is Co-Chaired by Kansas City Chiefs Chairman of the Board Clark Hunt and Cerner Corporation’s Chairman and CEO and Kansas City Wizards co-owner Neal Patterson.

Quotes:

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH PETER VERMES
On the game
“Even though we didn’t get the three points, I thought we had a good performance. We controlled the game and had the majority of the chances tonight. Walking off the field, I heard a couple of our players talking about where we could be right now if we played like this the entire season. It’s good to see that the team is confident with the way we are playing. When I took over, we talked about changing the attitude of this team, and that definitely is happening.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On the game
“I thought that we had a good offensive performance tonight, and that makes it easy to play defense. Colorado didn’t have a lot of good scoring chances, and I credit that to our solid performance on defense, but also because of how we controlled the game offensively. Colorado is a good team, but I thought tonight I thought we were the better team and put ourselves in a good position to get three points. It’s just unfortunate we were not able to get the win, but overall it was still a good effort.”

On his near miss in the second half
“Claudio played a great ball in on the corner kick. It sailed over three or four guys to get to me. I thought I put a great strike on the ball right off of my nine stitches, but it was just a little bit wide of where I wanted to put it and it bounced right off the post.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER KEVIN HARTMAN
On the game
“We had a stellar performance defensively tonight. Colorado had one opportunity, I think it was Omar Cummings who had a good shot in the first half, but fortunately I was able to beat it to the near post to make the save. Overall a good performance by the team, and the guys in front of me made my job easy tonight.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS STRIKER ZOLTAN (through an interpreter)
On his adjustment to MLS and his performance tonight
“My ultimate goal is to become a starter, but I’m learning a lot more about the league by watching these games up close on the sideline. I thought when I came in tonight I made an impact, and we had several good scoring chances in the second half. Hopefully we can turn those chances into goals, and I’m going to keep doing everything I can to help this team make the playoffs.”

COLORADO RAPIDS STRIKER CONOR CASEY
On the game
“The last two games we haven’t played as well as we’d like to.”

On the lack of a win in the last 4 games
“Obviously we want to win, but we still have things in our hands. Obviously it would be nice to have won the last couple games, but it’s not like we’re getting blown out.”

COLORADO RAPIDS HEAD COACH GARY SMITH
On the team’s recent stretch of close games
“It’s a good run at this stage of the season. We’d like to have been more creative. The conditions are so different to our own pitch. It’s faster; it’s a different type of game. We’ve had to adapt a little bit with our group. It’s a slight change for us, but I thought it was a very determined, very resilient effort and at this stage of the season it’s another point to our tally.”

On the Wizards’ performance
“I think they were competitive. Two or three of their guys played extremely well. Jimmy Conrad is a great captain. I thought he led their group very, very well. I wouldn’t say that he was overzealous with his physical presence. He competes. He leads by example and we’ve got two or three guys that are exactly the same.”

COLORADO RAPIDS GOALKEEPER PRESTON BURPO
On the Rapids’ use of players on the post
“Yeah we have that a lot. Kimura was in the right place at the right time and saved a goal and that’s why we have him there. It was a great job by him.”

 Share Your MLS Stories

A More Splendid Life, a football blog out of Canada, is looking for stories from footie fans that have experience with MLS. Read the author's appeal below and shoot him an email with your favorite MLS/soccer stories!

I would love it if you could send me (amoresplendidlife[at]gmail.com) a unique story or experience with your time in Major League Soccer, even if it's only a few sentences, or even one sentence. It could anything, a chance meeting with an old friend at the ground, the experience of your first live home game, when your travel bus broke down, the first time you ever heard there even was an American professional soccer league. You don't have to live in a city with an MLS club; hell, you don't even have to be North American: as the Premier League has demonstrated, countries no longer culturally "own" their leagues, so it's not a closed shop. I will try to include everything I receive, and I'll obviously credit you for it unless you specify otherwise. And if you're a writer, feel free to link this post for others to join in.

I don't expect this to yield any concrete answers; the idea is to unearth something of the league's hidden legacy over the past thirteen years, how MLS has become ingrained in American sporting culture outside of the endless technical debates that dominate the journalistic spectra, all with the hope it might give us some idea of where the league could be headed. Tomorrow, I'll get the ball rolling with my own MLS story.

And I look forward to hearing from you!

 Baker Greeks Coming Saturday

Jimmy C's bobblehead looks on as Cristman plays the piano.

Saturday night, a group of Greek students from Baker University will be joining us at CommunityAmerica Ballpark to watch our Wizards host the Colorado Rapids. As part of the event, striker Adam Cristman visited Greek houses at Baker last night. Above, see Cristman playing the piano at the Phi Mu sorority house. That wasn't a popular decision or anything.

 NSR: Matt Ziesel's Run

No, this isn't a high school football blog, but this story is worth posting anywhere. Matt Ziesel, a freshman high school student with Down's Syndrome at Benton High School in St. Joseph, MO, ran for a touchdown last week in the final seconds of a 46-6 loss against their arch rivals Maryville. Read Ryan Young's write-up of the play and the outpouring of emotion that has followed. You can watch the video here:

Wolff For Goal of the Week

Josh Wolff, in the middle of an excellent month of September, is up for MLS Goal of the Week for his game-tying goal Saturday night in our clutch 3-2 win over FC Dallas. Wolff now has four goals in the month of September (in four games). He also created an own goal and had a deflected pass turn into a goal in the first game of the month, our 4-2 win at New England. Go vote for Wolff's latest tally. See the goal here:

 Thanks For Coming Scouts

After Saturday night's contest, a couple hundred local Boy Scouts camped out on the field at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, completing their 2009 events with the Wizards. Earlier in the year, we hosted the Scouts for a match and helped them administer a food drive. At that game, the Scouts received the first half of their Wizards patch, with the second half coming after taking part in Saturday night's camp out. We enjoyed working with all of the Scouts and hope to continue this fun event in future years!

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH PETER VERMES
On scoring two goals from corner kicks
“One of the places where we felt we could put pressure on them was set pieces, and getting that corner kick goal was something we really thought we could take advantage of. Where it got difficult was we didn’t put the hammer on after that. We needed to go at them because they were ripe for the picking at that point. But give credit to them, they found themselves back in the game when they tied it just before halftime. The two goals they scored were mistakes on our part, which is not a good thing, but we did a very good job outside of that by not giving them a lot.”

On second-half strategy
“We went into the second half and the big thing for us was that we wanted more diagonal balls because we thought that we could expose them wide, because they play so many guys tight in the middle. So then we started getting some playable balls. You could see Davy Arnaud and other guys were getting in, and it gave us a good rhythm, and finally we got that goal to tie the game. Once we got that you could really see the tide turn.”

On Jimmy Conrad’s goal
“I am happy for Jimmy [Conrad]. He struggled with two plays today, and he made up for it in regards to getting that goal. Sometimes the game bites you and then sometimes you get a chance to bite back, which he did.”

On Kansas City’s three subs: Kei Kamara, Zoltan and Graham Zusi
“Kei has a presence physically that puts defenses under major pressure, and then Zoltan is an extremely smart soccer player. You can see when balls get played out to him that very rarely does he lose the ball through the dribble or the pass. He winds up finding guys. Those two are a big help to our team. We will continue to evaluate things as we move forward, but they were great subs into the game. Additionally Graham Zusi did a great job in the middle of the field today. He kept possession for us, and he is a really smart soccer player.”

On Josh Wolff
He [Josh Wolff] has worked his butt off every game that we have played. He has never taken a play off, and it is really evident tonight. His type of attitude and management of the game is very important for us.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On his goal
“It was a free kick at midfield. Claudio had it. Most of the time I take those, but he wanted it so I went out. I thought he was going to play it to me but he sent it to Harrington so I kept running. Fortunately it found me and I army crawled it into the goal.”
On his defensive performance
“We had to win this game for our season to continue. I had the weight of the world on my shoulders there for a while. There were no defensive mistakes tonight it was just two mistakes by me, which led to two goals. It hurts, but you move on. I am not pleased with my performance overall, but it was nice to get that back with a goal late.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS FORWARD JOSH WOLFF
On the game
“Overall it was a scrappy game out there, but we were able to pull it out because we fought hard. We were able to get some goals, which is nice for our fans here at home.”
On the substitutions
“I think the reserves came in and did a great job of coming in and making plays and helping us get some goals. They did extremely well.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS FORWARD KEI KAMARA
On his first appearance for the Wizards
“What I bring to the game is my speed and my physical game. Coach told me to make a difference every time I step on the field, which is what I try to do. It was great to get the win tonight in front of our fans.
On being new to the team
“Soccer is the same language everywhere you go. It will not take me long to get acclimated with the team. I have already trained with the team for three days and then the game tonight so going into this week of more training, I should be ready to go next weekend. Soccer is one language.”

FC DALLAS HEAD COACH SCHELLAS HYNDMAN
On the game
“I thought it was a really good game for both teams. It was a high-energy game. A lot was at stake. We got scored on early and then we were able to come back. In the second half I thought we earned that second goal and then Zoltan comes on the field and there’s a breakdown in concentration. It’s a killer. It’s a killer. Give a lot of credit to Kansas City. They kept coming and kept coming and I think the pressure was on us so much. I thought Dario (Sala) played a great game. How can you say a goalie had a great game when a team scores three goals? But it could’ve been a couple more. I thought he had a great game. Kansas City is a difficult place to play, and there was a lot riding on the game.”

On the two quick goals by the Wizards
“You lose focus. You’re holding on, and then you get tight. Then the other team gets the lead and they get momentum.”

FC DALLAS GOALKEEPER DARIO SALA
On the game-winning goal by Jimmy Conrad
“We weren’t having very many good breaks, and that was one of the (types of) plays we’ve been suffering from the whole year.”

On the game
“The only positive thing I can say is that we are not going to leave this tournament without a fight.”

 Just Clownin' Around

After today's training session, some clowns from the Ringling Bros, Barnum & Bailey circus that is in town through Sunday this weekend stopped by to taking on some of our players at Swope. Our guys included in the game: Matt Besler, Adam Cristman, Eric Kronberg, Kevin Souter and Graham Zusi. The Wizards ended up winning the game, but those clowns could play a bit. Here are a couple of the pictures. Look for more on the KC Star website tonight or tomorrow. Thad also took some pictures. Look for them at The Back Post...he'll likely link to a photo gallery too. For more about the circus, click here. For tickets in KC, click here.

 The Game is in KC

The field board at last night's game.

We've said it before and we'll say it again, the best way for you to help bring the FIFA World Cup to Kansas City is to visit www.goUSAbid.com and sign the petition. By doing this, you will show the support for the bid in our area and help show the USA Bid Committee that Kansas City has some great soccer fans. If they watched the game last night, they will know that we can draw people for big soccer events. The Game is in KC!

 Kei Trains

Dude has some RIPPED legs.

Today, new acquisition Kei Kamara trained with the team for the second time. He is a big, powerful guy with a fun personality. Thad over at The Back Post did a video interview with him after training. Make sure to head over there for details on why Kei choose #23 among other things. He also did an interview with Metro Sports, so watch Wizards Weekly tonight (9:30 p.m.), tomorrow (6:30 p.m.) or Saturday (11:30 a.m.) to see more of that.

 Chivas Top America 2-1

There was a huge line just before the gates opened tonight at Arrowhead.

CD Guadalajara (Chivas) topped archrivals Club America 2-1 Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd of 26,119 in the Clasico Bud Light at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. America opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before two late strikes propelled Chivas to a dramatic 2-1 win. The game marked the 205th edition of the Clasico. America now leads the all-time series 74-68-63. The attendance marks the 6th highest total for soccer in Arrowhead Stadium history.

The score was tied 0-0 at halftime in a back-and-forth affair that featured 13 total shots. Club America then broke through in the 53rd minute through an excellent finish by striker Daniel Marquez. Ismael Rodriguez played a long ball out of the back that bounced over the Chivas defense into Marquez’s path. Marquez held off a defender and deflected the ball past Chivas goalkeeper Luis Ernesto Michel for a 1-0 lead.

Chivas leveled the score at 1-1 through a Club America own goal in the 73rd minute. After a dangerous cross into the area, Club America defender Fernando Lopez redirected the ball into his own net while trying to clear the danger.

Chivas then scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to send their fans into a frenzy. A free kick on the edge of the penalty area by Sergio Avila was initially saved by substitute goalkeeper Leonin Pineda, but Omar Arellano was there to slide the rebound into the open net for a 2-1 lead that would hold up for the final four minutes and three minutes of stoppage time.

The Kansas City Wizards return to MLS play this Saturday with a match against FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The Wizards are returning from a successful three-game road trip in which the team won two of three games.  Break During FIFA World Cup

MLS will take a break during the opening round of next summer's FIFA World Cup.

Next season, MLS will take a break during the opening round of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in League history. Take a look at the press release below from MLS regarding the details of next year's schedule:

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber announced today that for the first time in its history, MLS will not play League games during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The group phase includes the first 48 games of the 64-game tournament that begins on June 11, 2010 in South Africa. The last MLS game prior to the World Cup will be played on June 10 and MLS will not schedule any additional League games until after the group phase concludes on June 25. MLS does not plan to schedule games on the days of either World Cup Semifinal nor the World Cup Final.

“The decision to stop League play during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is part of MLS’ commitment to deepen its connection with the millions of soccer fans in the United States and Canada,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “The World Cup will be a focal point for all MLS fans and several MLS players will compete with their national teams at the tournament.”

The 2010 MLS Regular Season will again see each team play a 30-game regular season, followed by playoffs among eight qualifying teams. The 2010 season will begin with a single game March 25 and will conclude Oct. 24. The MLS Cup Playoffs will culminate in the championship match, MLS Cup 2010, on Nov. 21.

MLS plans to announce each club’s 2010 home opener in the near future. The complete 2010 MLS schedule will be announced early next year.

Philadelphia Union will play their inaugural season in 2010 as the 16th team in Major League Soccer, joining the Eastern Conference. The two eight-team conferences allow, for the first time in MLS history, clubs to play a balanced schedule – facing each of the other 15 teams twice, once at home, once away. As in previous years, the club with the best record at the end of the regular season will win the Supporters’ Shield, and the MLS Cup playoffs will determine the League’s champion.

Kei Kamara Joins Wizards in Trade

July 4, Kamara scored for Houston at CAB and pulled out a white glove as a tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

Today, we acquired striker Kei Kamara from the Houston Dynamo for striker Abe Thompson and allocation money. Kamara comes to the Wizards with 14 career goals and three career assists in 80 MLS games (50 starts) over four seasons. He has played for Columbus, San Jose and Houston. For more of his stats and info, check out his bio at Houston's website.

Kei will join us tomorrow for training. If you are coming out to the season ticket holder event tomorrow, you'll get to see his first training session in Wizards blue. He is available for selection starting Saturday should Peter Vermes feel he is ready to help the club.

We wish Abe all the best in Houston. He has been great to work with all the way around.

And the celebration:

That's right folks, we come away from a daunting three-game in eight-day trip to the East Coast with six points. PV, for one, was not satisfied with the haul. He told multiple reporters after the game that he felt we should have taken all nine. Check out the notables below, with plenty on Josh Wolff's latest tally and Kevin Hartman's exploits. We return to KC next Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. CT game against FC Dallas, who beat Los Angeles 6-3 tonight. That's an offense that is coming to life.

 Airport Fun/NYC

The World Trade Center Towers Spotlight.

That title is strictly for Lance Watson. Today, the team (and staff) enjoyed a nice 4.5 hour delay at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. Unruly weather in Newark kept us from departing on time (luckily the Coast Guard's training exercise in D.C. didn't affect us any). How do you pass a nearly 5-hour delay in an airport? Poker. How do you play poker when the chips are packed with the rest of the baggage? Starbursts:

Who won? This guy:

Props to Red Bull New York for hooking up the "W" Hotel in Hoboken, NJ. The place is very nice. And the view, especially on this day, September 11, is pretty special too.

The World Trade Center Spotlight a little closer up.

Zoltan, PV Visit Embassy of Hungary

We told you earlier about the trip to the Embassy of Hungary today by Peter Vermes (or Vermes Peter, as he would be called in Hungary) and Zoltan. The Embassy staff and diplomats were extremely welcoming and hospitable. It was a great experience. The Embassy is very large inside, though from the outside you wouldn't be able to guess it. The group share stories about Hungary and soccer and generally enjoyed the company of one another. The diplomats expressed their interest in coming to a match in KC. One staff member even was an exchange student at Park Hill High School. Hopefully we'll be able to welcome them for a home match in the near future.

Vermes shook hands with one of the officials at the Embassy.

Vermes and Zoltan look over a map of Hungary together with some excellent Hungarian finger-foods in the background.

One of the Embassy staff members showed PV and Zoltan this incredible goal that Zoltan has seen before.

A group picture after spending time together at the Embassy. The statue in the background serves to commemorate friendship between Hungary and the United States.

This is the goal they watched:
