 Happy New Year's Eve!

Enjoy the festivities tonight everyone, but make sure to be careful. Thanks to all our readers and Wizards supporters for your viewship and fanhood in 2009 and the decade of the 00's. We look forward to kicking off the 10's with a bang in 2010!

What was your favorite memory from the 00's? The 2000 title game? The '04 Open Cup at Arrowhead? The first game under OnGoal? Let us know!

 Silly Season Upon Us

With the turning of midnight tonight, the silly season (the international transfer window) will be in full effect. Some moves we already know? Landon Donovan to Everton on a 10-week loan. David Beckham to AC Milan through the World Cup. Former Wizards forward Yura Movisyan to Randers FC. It's now looking like another former Wizards striker, Eddie Johnson, could be moving in January. According to Ives Galarcep, EJ will join Aris FC in the Greek league, a team currently fighting for a place in the Europa League. New reports say that Freddy Adu might be joining him. Silly season indeed!

Enjoy your New Year's celebrations and get ready for transfer rumors all over the place starting tomorrow!

 Petition Progress

As you know from the last few months of reading Hillcrest Road, we're supporting the petition to show the rest of the U.S. that Kansas City is serious about bringing the FIFA World Cup here should our country host the event in 2018 or 2022. We've just moved into a tie with Miami for 6th place, and we're less than 300 behind Philadelphia for 4th place. Help us get there! Visit www.goUSAbid.com/kc and sign the petition, then invite your friends and family members to do the same. Already done that? Ask one more person you didn't ask before to sign. Every little bit helps!

 Adu/SuperDraft/International Update

Freddy Adu is telling people on Twitter that he has an offer on the table, but that it has to be the right one. Check it out. Where do you want to see him go?

Ives Galarcep breaks down some scenarios apparently playing out with potential Generation adidas signings. Some big-time talent looks to be joining the League this year...always a good thing. Any of those guys you would like us to take at #4? How about #20?

Today Aston Villa and Liverpool faced off in a big EPL match with a dramatic ending. We won't tell you the final here, but you can click this link to see the score. Also on that page is the score of a Hull City-Bolton matchup that saw Jozy Altidore start and play 55 minutes. Though they didn't play today, two straight wins have Roberto Mancini thinking EPL title for Manchester City.

 JC at ESPN.com/Onalfo Resurfaces

After a few days off for the holidays, Hillcrest is back in front of the monitor. While we were away, Jimmy Conrad penned another article for ESPN.com about the future of MLS. Take a look at the always-entertaining writing.

Also, yesterday D.C. United hired former Wizards head coach Curt Onalfo as their newest head man. How about that for an opening game? Onalfo starts his tenure at DCU Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark against the Kansas City Wizards. See you all at CAB to cheer on the Wizards against DCU and Onalfo.

Onalfo's coaching career began in 2007 with a 4-2 win at D.C. United, and our first-ever game at CAB was a 2-0 win by the Onalfo-led Wizards over D.C. This one will be another fun tilt. Will beating D.C. with Onalfo at the helm be more sweet, or is it always sweet to beat Handball United?

Give the Gift of Soccer (KC Bid)

Greetings everyone. We have been spreading the word in bits and pieces for some time now, and we've been steadily adding bid petition signatures and moving up the charts. Kansas City currently sits in 7th place out of the 27 cities still in the running to hold matches should the USA host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022. That's pretty good. We want to take it to the next level.

We are 120 signatures away from becoming the 7th city to surpass the 10,000 signature mark. We are also less than 750 signatures away from 4th place (currently occupied by Philadelphia). If every one of our followers on Twitter or half of our fans on Facebook get just ONE person to sign the petition, we will blog past the 10K mark and move easily into 4th place. Let's do it!! Get just ONE person to sign the petition at goUSAbid.com/kc between now and Christmas Eve. Get two people if you have the time--I dare you :)

Current Rankings

 The 2000s in Review

Miklos Molnar celebrating his game-winning goal in MLS Cup 2000.

Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star did a report last week we have yet to link to about the decade that was for the Kansas City Wizards. He notes how everything started off with a bang in 2000 with our first MLS Cup championship and how the League and team have continued to grow throughout the decade. Enjoy.

 MLS Announces SuperDraft Signings

Today, MLS announced some players that will be available to clubs come January in the MLS SuperDraft. The League has signed college seniors Andre Akpan (Harvard University), Zach Loyd (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Toni Stahl (University of Connecticut). The underclassmen who have signed as part of the Generation adidas program are Teal Bunbury (Akron University), Dilly Duka (Rutgers University), Blair Gavin (Akron University) and Jack McInerney (US U-17/Cobb Soccer Club).

There are plenty of connections to the Wizards in this group. Loyd played with Michael Harrington for a year at North Carolina. Bunbury is the son of former Wizards forward Alex Bunbury (and will become the first son of an MLS player to play in MLS). McInerney played here for the U.S. U-17s in the run-up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

What do you think of this group? Anyone you'd like to see Kansas City select? Let us know if you've seen any of these guys play.

 Conrad, Hartman, Espinoza on NTs

Defender Jimmy Conrad, goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and midfielder Roger Espinoza have been called to their respective national teams for January training camps. Conrad and Hartman are two of 30 players to take part in Bob Bradley's camp beginning Jan. 4 to evaluate MLS and Scandinavia-based USA players. Conrad enters camp as the player with the 3rd most caps (27) on the roster. Hartman rejoins the USA setup for the first time since playing the first two games of 2006. Conrad will be looking to make the World Cup squad for his 2nd consecutive tournament, after he played two matches for the Red, White and Blue in Germany 2006.

Espinoza is the only player not based in Honduras to make Reinaldo Rueda's team, as Amado Guevara recently signed with Motagua is his homeland. Espinoza burst onto the scene for Honduras at a similar camp last January before playing an important role in the UNCAF Nations Cup team that earned a place in last year's CONCACAF Gold Cup. You'll recall that Espinoza scored a goal for Honduras in NE the same day that Davy Arnaud scored for the USA and we tied the Revs 0-0 in a crazy-fun tripleheader.

The kicker of all this? USA hosts Honduras Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. CT in a game broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel (English) and Galavision (Spanish). USA and Honduras faced one another four times in 2009, with the USA going 4-0. Both squads have qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, so this is a great opening tune-up for both.

 Help us Document on Flickr

Yes you've already seen photos today in the post below, but now anyone can help us document the work on our new stadium as it happens. Head to our new Flickr group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/kcsoccerstadium/ to upload your own photos throughout the process and see what other fans have submitted.  Equipment Man Mike Checks In

Mike poses with the local children during a break from their soccer matches.

Wizards Equipment Manager Mike Flaherty has spent the last couple weeks of his off-season in Maha Sarakham, Thailand on a personal trip. Mike also took some left-over Wizards equipment as a good-will gesture to some of the local children who, as you will see below, love playing soccer. Check out the update we received via email from Mike yesterday:

I went to Maha Sarakham, Thailand this off-season to the small village of Ban Ponethong and had the privilege of spending 3 great days with a village of new Wizards fans! Thanks to Robb (Heineman) I was given the opportunity to represent the Wizards on a kind of good will trip to Thailand and to bring soccer equipment and school supplies to some small village schools. Ban Ponethong is a small village in the Northeast of Thailand near Laos in the Isaan region. It is widely known as the poorest area in Thailand. I went with a friend who went to school and grew up there. The word got out that I was coming to the village and being a Farang (westerner), this was a big deal. I felt like a bit of a celebrity when I arrived and people came out of there homes to say Sawadee (hello). I had the chance to meet the entire village and through my friend talk to most of them and pose for photos with them. I was given a great tour of the village and had the chance to see the school and temple grounds as well as some family homes. I had a new perspective on the things that I have and take for granted on a daily basis in both work and my private life. Getting to see the kids become excited by a new ball was, not to sound corny... but uplifting. I was able to give the school some Wizards memorabilia as well... the biggest treat to the kids were the mini team posters that I brought.

Then the kids wanted to play, and for me, this was the best part. W
e played for three days stopping for meals, some sleep and Nam (water) for the Farang. It was great getting up in the morning and after going for a walk around the village finding the kids waiting for me at the house ready to play. We played every day with out being able to talk just laugh and play. After a few days, kids were practicing their English by saying the names of the players on the posters. We played on the school practice field and playground that was made up of dirt, gravel and some dried grass but to the kids it was the pitch! Most of them played barefoot as did I the first day... just the first day. The school said thank-you by performing a Drum Dance taking up the main street in the Village. I was also invited to the school to hear the students give speeches they memorized on their accomplishments for the year. These kids were selected to present these speeches in a competition to honor the King. It was a great privilege to be a part of it, and I truly felt honored to be there.

The Drum Dance Mike witnessed through the village.

Looking back, I think of all the privileges I have and the honor of being a part of such a great club. I sometimes take for granted that I go to work and walk out onto a perfectly groomed practice pitch and get the chance to be part of a professional training session. Thanks again to the owners, technical staff, front office, players and fans for allowing me to reach out on their behalf!

 International Roundup

**SPOILER ALERTS**

Today's soccer calendar was chalk-full of some great match-ups, including games in the FIFA Club World Cup, the Europa League and the English Premier League, among others. There were some statements, such as Tottenham's 3-0 win over Manchester City; some upsets, such as Burnley holding Arsenal; some comebacks, such as Barcelona coming from behind to beat Atlante and reach the FIFA Club World Cup finals; and some expected results, like Chelsea's 2-1 win over Portsmouth (now led by former Chelsea boss Avram Grant). For all results, click here.

In more local news, the LA Galaxy re-signed Landon Donovan to a 4-year contract that featured a significant raise and will keep USA's #10 and the reigning MLS MVP at The Home Depot Center through 2013.

The U.S. Men's National Team announced today that they will visit the Netherlands on March 3, 2010 in preparation for next summer's FIFA World Cup.

Also, it seems that Akron coach Caleb Porter has decided to stay with the team and not join D.C. United. Multiple reports have our former boss Curt Onalfo as a prime candidate to take the position. That would make for some interesting story lines around our home opener against DCU March 27, 2010.

 Wizards Road Opener Changed

When MLS home openers were originally scheduled back in September, our second match of the season was scheduled to be at the Houston Dynamo on Saturday April, 3. That game has been taken off the docket, with Houston now opening against Real Salt Lake on Thursday, April 1 on ESPN2. Our first road game (and all the other 2010 matches) will be learned after the first of the year. Anyone planning on a trip to Houston will have to wait until later in the season.

 USA Bid Video

The people of ESPN put together a great video to support the USA's bid to bring the FIFA World Cup here in 2018 or 2022. Two words: GOOSE BUMPS.

MLS Insider offered up some insights from today's USA Bid Committee meeting at MLS HQ. Enjoy the great stuff from our boy SF.

 Another Auction

The annual U.S. Soccer Foundation holiday auction is now up and running. The auction features a Kansas City Wizards 2009 autographed team jersey, among many other outstanding items. Some of the other international options? A 2009 FC Barcelona autographed pennant, signed jerseys from Rangers, West Ham, Boca Juniors, AS Monaco and Arsenal. There's something great for everyone, and all proceeds benefit the U.S. Soccer Foundation, a very worthy cause.

Three Wizards weddings Saturday 12/5: Kyle and Marcela Rogers; and Lance and Katy Watson; and Mike Flaherty - CONGRATULATIONS to all.

The team reports back to Kansas City in six weeks, which amazes me. There truly is no off-season which is great as I know the Wizards are excited to get back on the field after sweating through their rigorous workout packages. In the front office, the biggest difference now than during the season is that here is no set routine, although we are still extremely busy. One of the many things that keeps me up at night is that I truly wish that we had a fierce rival. One team that we could bestow all the fury of everyday life and a team that just makes you cringe when you hear its name. Over the years we have had some great rivalries, but there was never a constant. Does this mean we should go out of our way and garner one? Perhaps. If so, then which team?

The off-season is also a time where we can try and focus some energy on a big splash in the media or community. The Wizards have been featured on The Amazing Race, Extreme Home Makeover, and trying now for Made and Junior Seau's Sports Jobs (as well as trying to get Adam Cristman on 'I Survived a Japanese Game Show'). In 2001, I thought I had landed a big one. I coordinated with ESPN to have our team play a practical joke on Tony Meola. We were going to kick-off, play the ball back, and watch Nick Garcia rifle the ball into our own net. I had most of the parties on board, but MLS offices nixed it (probably a good decision on their part).

With the anticipation of our new stadium, we will go through not only a new branding exercise, but also strive to market our team and product differently (and certainly more). We will do this with increased budget, greater use of technology, and garnering more key partners of which we have increased a lot since OnGoal purchased the team. I know on the Technical side, the staff is working long and hard to solidify the team and identity.

Another quick anecdote: (and unfortunately all the really, really good ones might have to be told over a beer or kept in the vault). How about the Cesar Delgado Experiment? After a rash of injuries right before the 1999 season was set to kick-off with our goalkeepers, the Wizards had to quickly sign a player to take to Dallas for the opener. Mexico is close to Texas so Cesar Delgado it was. His introduction to the team featured a warm-up consisting of 15 players rapid-firing shots from all angles into the net. Hey, it must have worked as the two teams went into halftime tied 0-0. Nope. After nutmeg, slow dribbler, a near post-goal, and rebound in the second 45, the boys in blue headed home. At training Monday morning, Cesar was told to sit it out, watch the game again on the TV/VCR, grab the yellow pages, find a cab, and go to the airport.

Wizards Partner with Don Bosco for "Happy Holiday" Event

This past weekend, the Wizards and Don Bosco partnered for a special holiday event for Kansas City area children. On Saturday, 60 children from Don Bosco’s youth program took part in the “Happy Holiday” event at Dave & Busters from 9:00-11:00 am. The children were served breakfast, and then had the chance to play games against Wizards players and staff, including team captain Jimmy Conrad. All of the games were placed on open play, so the children were able to play any game they wanted, and “Santa” Dynamo was also on hand to give gifts to the children.

Here are some photos from the event:

 2010 Open Tryouts Announced

Will the Wizards find another Kevin Souter?

The Wizards open tryouts will be March 13-14 of 2010 at the team's Swope Park Training Facility.

The Wizards held an open tryout in 2008 for the first time since their inaugural 1996 season, with the event drawing over 200 players from 15 different countries. Two players eventually signed for Kansas City; midfielders Kevin Souter and Nelson Pizarro. Both went on to play in MLS matches for the Wizards in 2008, and Souter started the final four games of the regular season and both MLS Cup Playoff matches for Kansas City. Another 200 participants took part in the tryouts in 2009. Numerous talented participants stood out, and five of the open tryout players were invited back during the season to train with the Wizards.

The tryout costs $200, and players can sign up and get all the information on the tryouts by going to www.kcwizards.com/opentryout. Any additional questions can be sent to tryouts@kcwizards.com.

Do you think the Wizards can find a diamond in the rough, like in 2008? Make sure to pass the tryout info on to any talented players you know, or to anyone who has always dreamed about being a professional soccer player.

 Gansler Elected to NSCAA Hall

On behalf of the entire Wizards family, congratulations to Bob Gansler! The former Wizards and U.S. National Team coach will be inducted into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Hall of Fame on Friday, January 15th in Philadelphia. Also joining Gansler in this year's class is Bob DiGrazia, the long-time men's coach at the University of California.

Gansler had a distinguished career both as a player and a coach. In the 1960's he played in 25 games for the United State National Team. As a coach, he led the United States in the 1990 World Cup, the country's first in 40 years. Wizards fans will also fondly remember Gansler as the coach who won the MLS Cup Championship and MLS Supporters Shield in 2000 and the U.S. Open Cup in 2004.

He currently is a staff coach for Elm Grove Soccer Club, is a consultant for the Wisconsin Olympic Development Program and U.S. Soccer and is on the NSCAA Academy’s instructional staff.

The NSCAA induction will be his latest Hall of Fame honor: Gansler also is a member of the Wisconsin Adult Soccer Association Hall of Fame (1987), the United Soccer Leagues Hall of Fame (2002) and the U.S. Adult Soccer Association Hall of Fame (2006).

Additionally, he was presented with the Walt Chyzowych Award for achievement and dedication to the growth of soccer in 2000 and the Werner Fricker Award for creating a lasting legacy in the sport in 2008.

 Soccer Gifts Day VII

Today, we got more academic with David Goldblatt's The Ball is Round: A Global History of Soccer. Mr Goldblatt follows the history of the beautiful game as it rose from a local ritual to a world-wide phenomenon. He goes on to say why soccer is poised to break out even further in the United States. Hopefully he is right.

In other reading options, anything by Simon Kuper is a good bet to delight.

 Soccer Gifts Day VI

The next best gift to give your favorite soccer lover is the Spanish-language cable tier. He or she only speaks English, you say? Well, that doesn't matter. Football is a universal language, and GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL sounds great even if the rest of the words are gibberish. Time Warner Cable's Spanish tier costs only $7.99 per month and includes soccer-heavy channels such as Telemundo, Univision, Telefutura, GolTV and ESPN Deportes among others. Call your local cable operator and check out the options.

Juniors Show Well in Winter Showcase

The U-16's Played Well in Phoenix

The Wizards Juniors had a solid showing at the Winter Showcase in Phoenix over the weekend. The U-16 team went 2-1 over the weekend, and the U-18 team played to three draws.

On Friday the U-16's defeated Seaside United 1-0 on a goal from Eric Moore in the 79th minute. The U-18's also faced Seaside United on Friday, playing to a 0-0 draw.

On Saturday both teams played the Richmond Kickers. The U-16's won 2-0 behind goals from Eric Moore and Chris Brown. The U-18's played a wild game, with Will Witherspoon scoring in the 90th minute to earn the Juniors U-18 team a 3-3 draw.

The Showcase concluded on Monday, with the Wizards Juniors taking on Crossfire Priemier out of Redmond, Washington. The U-16's were dealt their only loss of the weekend, falling 1-0. The U-18's scored another late goal (Tony Young in the 89th minute) to earn a 1-1 draw.

Wizards fans will also be happy to hear that U-16's Goalkeeper Jonathan Kempin made the "Academy Select Team." Development Academy Select Teams are comprised of 130 total players who were chosen by youth national team coaches and U.S. Soccer's youth national team scouting network.

 Soccer Gifts Day IV

The gift for day IV is none other than a table soccer court, aka a FOOSBALL TABLE! Yeah the formations are screwy and some people are way too good at this game (watch the video below), but it's always available for a good time.

 World Cup Draw Watch Party

Thanks to all of you who were able to make it out to the watch party today at 810 Zone on the Plaza. It was a great atmosphere for the World Cup Draw, and the Wizards hope you all had fun and hopefully were lucky enough to win one of the many giveaways.

Here are some photos from the event:

Brett to Jackson to Awkward Alley to Quiz

What a great day for soccer. After a nice WC Draw event at 810 Zone on the Plaza, we have now have our opponents and even though Ravi Ubha from ESPN.com predicts that the U.S. will not advance, I am very content with our group.

When Portugal came up on the board (unlucky for them), I thought of a funny story back in 1999. In that (dreadful) season, we played a game in LA on ESPN. Wizards forward Alex Bunbury was so excited for his friends and family to be able to watch him play. Midway through the first half he hit an absolute bomb and celebrated accordingly. At halftime he was so thrilled that so many people got to see his goal that I almost did not have the heart to tell him that George Brett's Hall of Fame acceptance speech ran so long that ESPN had not yet switched to our game. Insult to injury being a lifelong Kansas City resident (and former ball boy in 1985 for the Royals), Bunbury then asked solemnly who George Brett was.

What does everyone think about Preki and Mo being reunited in Toronto? I know one thing they had in common; they both had unbelievable Rolex watches while in KC. Every practice I was responsible for wearing Preki's watch on my left wrist and Mo's on my right during training. Mo had always instructed that if I was ever in the line of fire of a ball to make sure to lead with my left arm first. Back then we did a lot of shooting drills and we had some players who might have sprayed a few balls around. One day Ryan Tinsley struck an errant ball and it was screaming right at me. Without thinking I threw up an arm and deflected the missle, thankful I did not take one on the chin. After practice when I went to my car, there was a $20 bill tucked in my windshield wiper. Looking at the ball mark on my left arm, I was pretty certain Mo left it there.

Mike has claimed that he is very close to winning the Peter Byaruhanga jersey, which reminded me about the old training facility at Swope Park. After each practice, the veterans would get first crack at the shower, because the longer you waited, the higher the water level rose. Peter B was always the last one to shower, which ended up being a bath as the level was at least lower-thigh high. Does anyone remember the furniture in there? Van seats were the couches. Our equipment manager Joey Becera used to have to arrive an extra hour earlier to scurry all of the mice out each morning. We have truly come a long way.

That same time, our front offices were at 706 Broadway. One afternoon someone walked through my office door (which was upstairs in the far, back corner) put a gun to my head and asked me to step outside. The rest of the office was laying face down in a row and we were then told to count to 1,000. We only had one copy machine, so some of the people downstairs came up to see us "resting" there. GM Doug Newman, who had his office door shut and did not know what had been happening, was called downstairs where the staff complained that we had nap time and they didn't.

On a lighter note, while in Colorado the night before a game, Chris Brown (who is still the all-time leader in practice goals for the Wizards) was walking back from dinner with Brandon Prideaux. They cut down a little alley right by the team hotel and Chris tripped and landed on a homeless couple in the midst of "trying to stay warm." He actually recorded his first MLS assist the next day, but would give it all back to have not experienced "the alley."

OK, we need your advice. We are planning a 15-year celebration next year, inviting back former players and coaches. In your opinion, who are the top-15 Wizards players of all-time? Does Molnar's one year make the cut? Does Burciaga get the nod over Diego - or both or neither? How much impact did Uche have for the Wizards? Did Jim Moorhouse racking up goal mouth blocks for Tower have any influence? Hmmmmm.

Great World Cup Draw for the U.S.

Well, the World Cup Draw has come and gone. The United States is in Group C with England, Algeria and Slovenia.

What do you think of the draw? Most experts are viewing this as a relatively easy draw for the United States.

The U.S. opens against England in Rustenburg on June 12, their first World Cup matchup since the Americans' 1-0 upset victory at the 1950 tournament in Brazil.

The United States then plays Slovenia at Johannesburg's Ellis Park on June 18 and completes the first round on June 23 with its first-ever match against Algeria in Pretoria.

Wizards add Octavio Zambrano as Assistant Head Coach

The Wizards expanded their coaching staff today with the hiring of former Los Angeles Galaxy and New York/New Jersey MetroStars Head Coach Octavio Zambrano. Zambrano has the second-best winning percentage in MLS history, and he will serve as assistant head coach. The technical staff will also retain assistant coaches Kerry Zavagnin, Zoran Savic and John Pascarella for the 2010 season.

Here are is a portion of the press release:

“We worked to add an assistant coach with head coaching experience,” Wizards President Robb Heineman said. “Octavio (Zambrano) has excellent knowledge of our League and the international game. His presence will allow Peter Vermes to focus both on day-to-day coaching of the team and player personnel decisions more easily.”

Zambrano, 51, was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he lived before moving to the United States in 1980 to attend Chapman University. Zambrano is fluent in both English and Spanish. He also speaks Italian, Russian and Portuguese. Zambrano played for Ecuador’s U-20 National Team and First Division club Union Deportiva Valdez before starring at Chapman University in the U.S. Zambrano then played professionally for the Los Angeles Lazers in the USISL before becoming a coach.

"This is a great opportunity to return to MLS and join an organization with such a strong vision,” Zambrano said. “I anxiously await coming to Kansas City to start working with the team and preparing for the 2010 season."

Zambrano was a Head Coach in MLS for both the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York/New Jersey MetroStars, coaching 143 games and winning three division championships over six seasons. Zambrano went 80-55-8 as a head coach, including a 32-18-0 record in Los Angeles and a 48-37-8 record in New York. Zambrano coached some of the best players in MLS history, including Paul Caligiuri, Robin Fraser, Carlos Hermosillo, Eduardo Hurtado, Cobi Jones, Clint Mathis, Welton, Tim Howard, Lothar Matthaus and Tab Ramos.

Zambrano’s teams are known for playing fast-paced, attacking soccer. In 1998, the Zambrano-led Galaxy scored a League-record 85 goals in 32 games (2.65 goals/game) and posted the most wins and best winning percentage in League history (24-8-0, .750). In 2000, Zambrano’s New York scored 64 goals in 32 games (2.00 goals/game), the 8th most goals in League history by a club in one season. Zambrano also served as Head Coach of CS Tiligul-Tiras Tiraspol of Moldova from 2006-2008 and FC TatabĂ¡nya of Hungary from 2008-2009.

Zambrano holds “A” coaching licenses in the United States as well as in Europe, and is also an innovator in youth player development, having developed the first soccer academy in Major League Soccer with the MetroStars. He also founded and coached the Latino-based LA Salsa U-19 team to the finals of the McGuire Cup, the top youth competition in the United States.

Wiz bits and a dash of Byaruhanga

While Captain Hillcrest is off getting hitched, there will be a number of different voices on the blog in his stead. I started working with the Wizards in 1997, left after the 2001 season, and returned when OnGoal bought the team in 2006. I have worked over 280 Wizards games and many pre-season tours. l, like many people reading this, consider myself an ardent supporter. I love the Wizards team and organization and am passionate about soccer. I have seen a lot in my time and I wanted to share some of the highlights (lowlights?) with my fellow Wizards brethren. I will throw out various, random stories over the next couple of weeks and hope to interact with you on topics that will help with plans moving forward to our 15th season.

* Nick Garcia on his first trip with the Wizards was asked to roll down the window in the team bus by an 8-year old kid. He complied and was immediately hit in the face with a bag of urine. I will say that Nick is great for a locker room and not a long time goes by without someone telling a Nicky-G story.

* On our 1998 preseason trip to Ft. Lauderdale we had a collection of guys on the team who liked to partake in fun, nighttime activities. On what was supposed to be an off-day the next day, the entire team all went out together in the two team vans. On the drive home (very late or early depending on how you look at it), one van ran out of gas. The guys had to push the van over seven miles back to the hotel, but along the way passed the other van which blew out a tire. When the team (after all piling in one van) returned, there was a message on everyone's hotel phone saying that instead of a day off, they would do their timed beach run at 8am (or as they saw it, in less than two hours). I was at the end of the three-mile marker and was told to hit start on the stop watch when I got the call on my cell phone from the coach. The players all begged for me to start the clock a little late so the times weren't so awful. I got the call and waited for what I thought was around two minutes, but the team sludged to the finish line in an astounding 15-minutes and change. Ron Newman was tremendously pleased with the fitness level of the team. If any of you would like to send the great Coach Newman an email, and I promise he would love to hear from you, it is: coachrvn@aol.com.

* In a surprisingly hot afternoon game in April in Miami, the Wizards squared off against the Fusion. Interim Head Coach, and great story-teller, Ken Fogarty was at the helm and there were no other assistants for that game. He asked me to warm up the goalkeepers in preparation for the nationally televised match (he obviously did not care that I was wearing a suit). I did my best to warm Snitko up in my dress shoes and thought I was doing a decent job. That was until Chris always wanted to take crosses with a dummy runner to work on high balls. As ball after ball was whipped in from the corner, and I was getting sweatier and sweatier, a low cross was sent in. My job was to fake go up for a header while Chris caught the ball above me. I tried moving out of the way on the screamer, stopped, ducked, a bridged the starting goalkeeper who landed awkwardly on his shoulder. As he writhed in pain and screams, I leaned over and begged him to get up (to no avail). I quickly scampered to my PR duties, which included talking to the TV truck and talent. As Snitko laid there for a long while it occurred to me that we were about to go to kick-off. The talent was scrambling to find out what happened and my first response was "Jake Dancy." The game was delayed for five minutes and I still feel a little guilt for throwing Jake under the bus. We lost 1-0, which was our best result after six games to that point and Snitko had four or five saves.

* I got a new computer before a game in 1999 and the spell check button was automatically on. When I sent the game release story out to all the media, fans, etc. the computer changed all the names to what it thought was correct. Perky, Alexis Llama, Scott Million, Ouch Orator, Tony Meal, Chris Snatch, Jake Dancer, etc. evidentially played that night.

* David Winner locked his keys accidentally in his car, punched out the window to get them, needed stitches in his hand, then received a call saying he was starting the next game all within an hour.

* I played indoor soccer with my high school buddies and we were missing some players for a game. I recruited Chris Klein, Jake Dancy, Chris Brown, Brandon Prideaux, and Chris Henderson to play. We won handily.

* * * * * * *

Quiz: The first person to get three correct answers will win a 2001 authentic Peter Byaruhanga jersey:

What player told Bob Gansler he could not make a road trip because his nephew was having his birthday party that weekend?

What defender was subbed out in a 0-0 game early in the first half and sat Indian Style on the opposite sideline in defiance refusing to come back to the bench?

What player was asked if he would rather be on the U.S. Team that won the World Cup or win the Bass Master's Championship chose incorrectly and did not play again?

What player refused to sign his autograph, but instead used a personalized stamp that took 60 times longer to plaster on than to just sign his name?

What player refused to be traded here before the 2000 season because we "were at least 20 years away from winning an MLS Cup."

Thanks for your time and I will check back in later.

 Drake Fueled by KC

Randy Covitz of the KC Star has done a story about Drake's run in the NCAA Men's Soccer tournament that features several stars from the KC area. You might recognize the name Matt Kuhn. Matt is the younger brother of Wizards blogger extraordinaire Mike Kuhn of Down the Byline and was a member of the KCW Juniors U-19 team two years ago that took 2nd place at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships. Congrats Matt and the rest of the KC kids from Drake for your excellent play!
