 Wizards Whoop Tulsa 5-1

Today, the Wizards beat up on the University of Tulsa 5-1, though it was only 1-0 at halftime. The goals came from Josh Wolff, Teal Bunbury, Korede Aiyegbusi, Sunil Chhetri and Igor Kostrov. Aiyegbusi's, as you see above, was an attempted cross that got caught up in 20 MPH wind and snuck in under the crossbar over the goalkeeper.
We'll have some video of Chhetri's first Wizards goal, a close-range finish after a corner kick, later on.

 WHAT A WIN

This picture, by Jamie Squire of Getty Images, says it all. Wizards celebrating in front of the hometown fans.
Holy cow that was fun. Ryan Smith is an impact player. Jimmy Nielsen pitched his first MLS shutout in his first MLS game. Tonight marked our best-ever margin of victory in a home opener, and was the first time four different players scored goals since April 14, 2007 when we beat United 4-2 at RFK in Onalfo's first game as our coach. Goal scorers that day were Michal Harrington, Sasha Victorine, Eddie Johnson and Scott Sealy.
Since we scored more than three goals and won, the Planet Sub Hat Trick Special is in effect tomorrow. Mention the deal at area Planet Sub locations and receive a Planet Sub sandwich, chips and a cookie for just $3.
Quotes:
KANSAS CITY WIZARDS MANAGER PETER VERMES
On the game

“We talked as a team that we spent 62 days getting ready for tonight. We knew we were going to make some mistakes, but we had to come out with all the ideas of how we wanted to play and stay disciplined to that, and the guys did an excellent job of executing.”

On what impressed him the most
“We got four goals, which is great, but one of the biggest positive is that we also got a shutout. That is one of the most important things moving forward.”

On Ryan Smith’s debut
“He’s an extremely dangerous player, especially one versus one. It’s hard to control him, you could say that by how many fouls were created by him. He was also very locked into the game defensively, so it was a very good debut for him.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS WINGER RYAN SMITH
On his debut match

“4-0 is a very emphatic win, and that’s definitely a great way to start the season. Scoring that goal was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS STRIKER TEAL BUNBURY
On his debut

“The atmosphere was amazing. It’s really hard to describe just how great it felt to go out there. I was wondering before the game how it would feel to go in, and my family was here, so it was really cool that they got to see me play.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER JIMMY CONRAD
On reestablishing a home field advantage

“It was a point of emphasis for us. We wanted to make sure that we put our stamp on things here at home. This game is hopefully a good indication of where we’re heading, and if we can win 4-0 every game, we’ll be happy men.

On the improvement from last year
“I think we have a distinct style. It’s something we’ve been working on throughout the whole preseason. It’s a good system; everyone is on the same page, and that makes a big difference.”

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS STRIKER JOSH WOLFF
On the team’s offensive explosion

“Tonight you got to see a variety of different ways to score goals from us, which is good. The opportunities are coming, and we’re excited that we’re converting them. I thought we put them under pressure from the get-go, and we reaped the rewards from that.”

D.C. United Head Coach Curt Onalfo
On the loss

“For me, at the end of the day, for whatever reason we stepped on the field thinking we were just going to win the game. In real life, we actually need to roll up our sleeves and fight and earn it on the field. It was a disappointing performance. Having said that, it’s one game and we have to put it behind us quickly, learn from it. You know, we made a lot of youthful errors. We struggled with the size of the field, we struggled with the surface, we struggled with clearing the ball. A lot of things went wrong in one evening.”

On Andy Najar’s debut
“Andy is a young player. He’s got a real bright future and he’s going to learn with each opportunity he gets on the field.”

On the goals
“All of our guys need to a better job of recognizing danger. It’s a wet, slick night and just need to make sure we get the ball out of play when we need it.”

On the lack of cohesion of the team
“It was a little bit of an odd week. We had Julius sick all week with stomach issues. Devon McTavish going down with a groin issue. It was a little bit of a fragmented week. Christian Castillo was sick most of the week, so it made for not a very cohesive week, but I figured still the guys would step in and be able adapt, but at the end of the day we didn’t. We have to move on. It wasn’t a good performance, but we know we have good performances in us. We should that as early as a week ago, down in Charleston. We just have to learn from our mistakes, move on, and get ourselves ready for Saturday. It’s as simple as that.”

D.C. United goalkeeper Troy Perkins
On the loss

“Yeah, we just weren’t sharp. Little things like getting to rebounds, on both ends really, hurt us tonight.  Little things like that we have to clean up, and overall it [tonight’s match] was an eye-opener for us. In the preseason we won games and played well, but coming into the season it’s a different story - a different ballgame. This is a good lesson to learn early, and we will move on from here.”

D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno
On Kansas City

“They were better tonight, there’s no question about it. They were hungrier, and controlled much of the game. We had a couple of moments where we really tried to play, and we had a good chance in the beginning of the game, but overall they were the better team.”

On moving forward from the loss
“This [tonight’s loss] is a slap in the face, because we have been playing pretty good soccer, and it is clear that this team has a long way to go to improve. We feel strongly about it [improving], and things happen during a season, and we are lucky this [tonight’s loss] happened early. We are going to go back to work and sort out all the things that were missing today.”

 Bad Blogger/New KCW.com

Wow, what a bad blogger I've been today. It's 1:15 p.m. and there's nothing for you folks to chew on, other than last night's super-sweet Santi-vision piece. What do you think, should we bring that back again later in the year?
What's the reason for the delay? I've been working all morning on the new KCWizards.com, which will go live sometime late tonight/early tomorrow morning. For now, I can provide you with the screen shot below. We're very excited about the new website and the new ways of providing content it will provide. I will, however, ask that you all bear with us through the first couple of days/weeks on the new system. As always, there will be bugs. Once the site is live, send any thoughts/comments/suggestions to sitefeedback@kcwizards.com.
What's our goal for the site? Provide access to as much Kansas City Wizards content as possible. Even if we don't produce it, we want you to be able to find it from our site. That means you will (eventually) see a news aggregator that sends you out to all the stories on the web about our club.
The blog will stay here at hillcrestroadblog.com for now, but eventually it will be housed within the same system as the website. The focus of the blog will change slightly, shifting back to more of an off-the-field view of the team. Hopefully all the on-field stuff will be captured by the rest of the site itself.
Have any questions or comments in the mean time? Post them below. Yes, the stadium web cam goes live tomorrow with the website. Get ready!

 Home Opener Monday Link List

I've unofficially dubbed today Home Opener Monday. Join me in spreading the word if you'd like.Since the season is now just over 5 days away and the CBA situation was resolved this weekend, lots of people have been cranking out season previews. Here are a few of them (and some other links):
-Charles Gooch and the KC Star's The Full 90 has an afternoon rundown of links. I'd send you to many of them, but he already has, so let's not duplicate efforts.
If you haven't already, start reading Sam Pierron's Big Soccer blog. He takes you through the live of an original Wizards and MLS fan. This year, Sam will travel to every away match, and blog about the whole experience. The entire thing can be accessed from www.SamPierron.com/BigSoccer. Otherwise, here are his last two posts:Food, Glorious Food + I LUV SWA and Preseason. Preseason breaks down Sam's thoughts on the upcoming year, tying them back to the level of excitement and surprise of 1996, the first MLS season.
Wanting to scout D.C. United, our opponent Saturday? Check out some of Steve Goff's notes on the team, led by former Wizards coach Curt Onalfo.
For those who haven't seen, we'll be giving away a T-shirt to the first 5,000 fans into the stadium Saturday night, courtesy of Time Warner Cable. A picture of the shirt is below. If you don't yet have your tickets, buy them here.

 Messi the Marvelous

Take a look at this. Not only is he fouled to start the play, but he then goes on to make two La Liga defenders look like rec U-10 players. His finish is calm and cool, like always. Glad the USA isn't in Argentina's group to start? Met too:

By the way, he scored 8 goals in 3 games over 8 days last week. What?!

 Talkin' to Konopka

In honor of St. Patrick's Day yesterday, Hillcrest caught up with former Wizards goalkeeper Chris Konopka. Chris now plays for Waterford United in the League of Ireland First Division. We asked him about St. Patty's Day on the Green Island and for some information on the soccer. He is the only non-Irish player on Waterford United and wears #1 and has played the full 90 in both of United's games this season.
As a former Wizards player now over in the Irish 1st Division, compare Kansas City/US St. Patrick's Day celebrations to those over on the Emerald Isle:
First off, St Patrick’s Day in Ireland is a National Holiday, so everyone is off from work and most of the places are closed down. Every major town has a parade that would go down the main streets of the town. Dublin obviously has the biggest parade, which attracts most of the tourists from outside of the country. But even down here in Waterford there is a big parade that goes through the city, and mostly everyone from the county comes to it. It would be more of a festival rather than a day to drink green beer, with live trade music in the big squares of the town. That’s not to say that a fair share of Guinness doesn't get consumed! I guess the way to describe it is that it is more of a celebration that the whole family can enjoy.

What is it like living in Ireland?
I have enjoyed living every moment living in Ireland so far, it is like a second home to me now and have many close friends over here. The people are very friendly and outgoing to make you feel welcome. The country itself if beautiful, and I still get chills every time I look out and see the county as I am landing at the airport. You have to see it for yourself, but it is the greenest place you will ever see!

How is "real" corned beef and cabbage?
LOL! Corned beef is more of an American Irish thing, as I believe it was one of the cheapest things to eat during the depression, so the Irish, who most were on the lower end of the class system at that time in America, made due with eating corned beef, so that is why it is associated with Ireland. However, there are some places that will put it on the menu, and yes it does taste amazing! Especially if you wash it down with a fresh pint of Guinness!

What is the style and standard of play like in the Irish top flight?
The Irish League has been progressing every year and closing the gap between other European leagues. For the past 2 years St. Pat's Athletic have advanced to the final knockout round of the UEFA Cup before the Group stages start, losing to Hertha Berlin and Steaua Bucharest, respectively. Bohemians lost to Red Bull Salzburg by 1 goal on aggregate in the Champions League. So the standard is there especially when you see how the Irish teams are competing against the top teams in Europe.

Do you still keep in contact with any former KC teammates?
I still keep in touch with some of the players on the team that came into the league my year. Facebook is the best invention in the world if you live in a foreign country. You can still keep in touch with your family and friends like you are next door. And I will chat to some of the boys every now and again to see how they are doing.

How often do you check in on the team and their results?
I will check in every now and again to see if there is any news going around with the club or in the league in general. But I mostly will check up on my Philly teams (Eagles and Phillies) to see how they are doing since its tough to watch any baseball or football on TV! But there are a couple of sites online that will stream games during the season, so I can get my fix that way.

 Smith, Kostrov, Rocastle Signed

Smith battling with a member of the Columbus Crew down in AZ.
Some of this has been in the blogosphere before, but Ryan Smith, Igor Kostrov and Craig Rocastle have all signed contracts with the Wizards. Smith and Kostrov have all necessary paperwork and are immediately available for selection in League play. Rocastle is still awaiting his P-1 Visa. For more info, check out bits from the press release:
The three players will compete for spots across the Wizards’ midfield, with Smith ‘s natural position on the left, Kostrov on the right and Rocastle in the center.

“We’re excited to add three talented players to our roster,” said Wizards Manager Peter Vermes. “Smith and Kostrov will both play on the flank for us and they both bring pace and skill to their positions.”

Smith began his career in the youth system of Arsenal F.C., making his debut for the first team at the age of 16 in the Carling Cup. Current Arsenal captain and Spanish international Cesc Fabregas, French fullback Cael Clichy and Tottenham winger David Bentley were among the other young players to appear with Arsenal in the competition that year.

In 2005, Smith headed to Leicester City on loan, where he made 17 appearances and scored a goal. His performances attracted the attention of Derby County, who moved to sign the midfielder before the start of the 2006-2007 season. From Derby, Smith moved to Millwall on loan before signing a permanent deal with the side in 2007. After two years with Millwall, Smith fulfilled short-term contracts with Southampton and Crystal Palace, leaving Palace earlier this year at the end of his deal.

Smith, 23, joined the Wizards as a trialist this preseason and has scored three goals in the team’s nine exhibition matches so far, including one in Thursday’s intra-squad scrimmage.

Kostrov began his career with hometown club Dinamo Bender in the Divizia NaÅ£ională, the top division in Moldovan soccer. With the team, Kostrov made 65 appearances, scoring seven goals before moving to Israel halfway through the 2008-2009 season to join Hapoel Be’er Sheva. Kostrov was then loaned out to Maccabi Herzliya in 2009.

Kostrov, 22, joined the Wizards on trial at the start of 2010 training, and has appeared in all of the club’s preseason matches thus far.

Rocastle has enjoyed a nine-year career with many clubs at all levels of the English game, starting with Kingstonian F.C. in 2001. Following a successful spell with Kingstonian that saw the team reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, Rocastle transferred to Chelsea in 2003. However, he would spend much of his time with the London club on loan. After leaving the club for Sheffield Wednesday in 2005, Rocastle would go on to play in England for Oldham Athletic and Port Vale, as well as in the Greek Super League with Thrasivoulos Filis. Most recently, Rocastle appeared for Forest Green Rovers in the English Conference.

“[Rocastle] is a guy that’s clean on the ball and sees the game really well,” Vermes said.

The midfielder, 28, joined Kansas City on a trial basis near the end of the team’s preseason preparations in Arizona in March. His signing is contingent upon his receipt of a P1 visa.

 Lots of Practice Content/Thanks

You saw our practice report yesterday with Kerry Zavagnin. Now, Thad from the Back Post and James from KCW Fans have a ton of extra stuff to chew on.
-Thad interview with K (Korede Aiyegbusi) and Kei Kamara. That's a lot of K's.
-Thad interview with Jimmy Nielsen. Warning: there's a touch of profanity in this one.
-James with a really nice first-person about his experience at practice with a bunch of photos at the end. I, for one, am really looking forward to what he creates over at KCWFans.com.
-Mike, as always, turns in his always-great former Wizards update today as well.
As an aside, I want to say thank you to Thad, Mike, James, Charles, Hershel and all the other folks out there who blog about the Wizards on a regular basis. Our crew of fan bloggers/journalists is far and away the best in MLS. You all provide a great service to Wizards fans.

 Construction Update

Video dude Jake went out to the stadium site today and got some film of the construction folks working through the rain on some concrete retaining walls along Village West Parkway:

 Hartman/Link Roundup/Int'l Notes

As many of you have seen already, goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is now with FC Dallas, after the club traded us a 2nd round selection in the 2012 SuperDraft for his rights. Here's the KC Star version of the story. Dallas' 3rd Degree and Steve Goff were also on the story from the start. Good luck Kevin, except against KC.
Other links of note:
-Today, ESPN published their 2010 preview of the Wizards. What do you think?
-Today, the Star ran a story in the Tuesday business section about the business of youth sports and what it means for the local economy. Author Alan Goforth talked to our own Greg Cotton in the section about new facilities. Skip ahead to that here.
-Mike Googled our Open Tryout participants and came up with the backgrounds of many.
Today features a pair of UEFA Champions League round of 16 matches and a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal. Arsenal trails Porto 1-2 on aggregate heading into the second game at Emirates. Fiorentina also trails 1-2 heading into the home game against Bayern Munich. Follow those scores at Soccernet or by watching FSC. The matches kick off at 1:45 p.m. CT.
Tonight, Columbus hosts Mexican club Toluca at Crew Stadium in the first leg of their two-game matchup. The Crew will be without Chad Marshall (injury), Frankie Hejduk (suspension) and Guillermo Barros Schelotto (suspension), making that match a little tougher.

 Open Tryouts Begin Saturday

The Kansas City Wizards 2010 Open Tryout takes place Saturday and Sunday at our Swope Park Training Center. As you know, our 2008 Open Tryout led to the signing of Kevin Souter and Nelson Pizarro. In 2009, Austin Williams of William Jewell College and Chad Becker of Rockhurst were invited back to train with the squad early in the season, though neither was signed to an MLS contract.
Tryouts begin Saturday at 9 a.m. CT. For the procedures of the event, click here. For the list of participants, click here. See any names you recognize on this list? Hoping any of these players are invited back to train with the first team?
Space will be limited around the fields due to the large number of folks trying out. If you're in the neighborhood and want to stop by, however, feel free.

 Visit to the Royals Game

Last Friday, several Wizards visited Surprise, AZ to take in a Kansas City Royals spring training game. One of the highlights of the trip was rookie Korede "K" Aiyegbusi, a London native, serving as ballboy. K, who doesn't know anything about baseball, learned some things the hard way:

Deal with the Enforcer...A Good One?

Soccer fans out there, you know what the summer of 2010 means. This summer is every fans' four-year-long dream. After the 2006 World Cup ended, people immediately looked at the roster and asked which players would be back for the 2010 version. The first friendlies in 2007 were the first opportunities for young players to show they could play a role in the 2010 tournament. Qualification started at the beginning of 2008 and continued through last October. With qualification complete, fans started to speculate about the final 23-man roster Bob Bradley would select.
Now, we're in the final run-up to the cup. According to the pretty count-down tracker available at the top of ESPN's World Cup website, we're 97 days and 18 hours away from the opening match. Since the U.S.A. plays on day two, that means we're just 98 days from the first U.S. Men's National Team match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Holy cow, that's coming up fast!
With the Cup bearing down on us, Hillcrest brokered a deal with his loving wife (the Enforcer). She's a big TV-watcher, with lots of favorite shows. She's also a big soccer fan. Her interest in the game, however, mostly ends after the United States, Argentina (where her dad is from) and Chile (where her mom's family is from). Hillcrest's does not end--anywhere. I would watch every match, every highlight show, read every commentary article (and maybe even write my own).
In recognition of my never-ending appetite for footie viewing and chatter, we've made a deal. Until the World Cup, I don't get to complain about The Kardashians, E! News, Project Runway or any Lifetime movie that captures her interest. Once we reach World Cup time (including the final days in the lead up to the event), the pretty HDTV will be tuned to soccer nonstop. Between game broadcasts, replays, ESPN's nightly review show, Sky Sports on FSC, the daily dose of soccer will be heavy (and awesome).
What do you think of the deal? Have you made a similar arrangement? Would you like to?

 Introducing Supporters' Showdown

For this, read the full release:
The Kansas City Wizards announced today the club’s formation of a new competition, with fellow Midwestern club A.C. St. Louis set to be the inaugural opponent. The contest, dubbed the “Supporters’ Showdown,” will consist of a game between the Kansas City Wizards and A.C. St. Louis first teams, followed by a match between supporters of both clubs.

The games will be played back-to-back on Saturday, March 20th at the Wizards’ Swope Park training facility, with the Wizards and A.C. St. Louis playing first at 2 p.m. Immediately afterwards, the supporters’ teams will play each other on an adjacent field. The winner of the competition will be determined by combining the scores of the two games, with a trophy awarded to the captain of the winning teams’ supporters.

“Knowing nothing about the talent of their supporter group, I’d say they don’t have a chance,“ joked Robert Houghton, president of the Hillcrest Syndicate, of the Wizards’ largest fan groups. “But I think it’s going to be fun. We’re all out there for the same reason, and that’s to see the sport be successful.”

"The Supporters Showdown is a great and unique way for us to continue to foster our strong relationship with our fans," Kansas City Wizards forward Davy Arnaud said. "I know the team and Wizards supporters will be ready to play on March 20th and we look forward to a great event."

Admission to the games will be free for season ticket holders and $5 for the general public. Wizards fans interested in participating in the supporters’ game should contact Sam Pierron at (913) 387-3413 or at spierron@kcwizards.com for more information. Only Wizards season ticket holders will be eligible to participate in the Wizards team for the supporters’ match.

The Wizards will also play a second game against A.C. St. Louis on April 3rd at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri.

Founded in November 2009, A.C. St. Louis will play its inaugural season in the NASL Division of the USSF Division 2 Pro League this year. The team boasts former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team member Steve Ralston as a player/assistant coach and is led by Head Coach Claude Anelka, brother of Chelsea and France striker Nicolas Anelka.
